Akimi Yoshida's Banana Fish volume 8. Eiji and Ash have a conversation about a girl that Ash once loved, and Eiji reacts with both surprise and glee at the revelations. Ash brings him down to earth with the flat statement that his girlfriend died before anything happened.
I had a long conversation about storytelling this weekend. A friend pointed out these panels from Akimi Yoshida's Banana Fish v8 as a real cool example of the strength of abstraction. Eiji's basically going D: and :D, and our minds add real feeling/detail. Creator/reader collaboration via simplicity
