Hochstein ballet had a good rep. Serious about technique and definitely strict, but not evil.
My mom found a place with a director who just loved teaching dance to kids. But there were a couple of pretty notorious studios in Rochester and if you wanted to dance in the Nutcracker or whatever that was where the auditions were. My teacher encouraged the effort but provided psychological prep.
If growing D-cups hadn't ended me as a dancer, regular interactions with people who made everyone they work with miserable eventually would have. And that would just have meant I "didn't want it badly enough." As if enduring cruelty and verbal abuse was an integral part of the art form.
