I kept telling the Celtics fans in my life that Tatum would probably be back this season. Having been through an Achilles tear myself, Iβm rooting for him.

People tend to talk about the loud, dramatic, graphic scenes on The Pitt, but last nightβs episode was a masterclass in balancing those with these incredible quiet moments. And all those quiet moments play so much more impactful because they contrast the chaos of the show. Amazing stuff!
I was like six years late to the party, but absolutely loved the Dolly Partonβs America podcast! I knew she was charming, and a mensch, and a savvy business woman, but I had no idea what an incredible songwriter she was.

Donβt overthink it. Itβs the Tahoe Tweezer in β13 and frankly, itβs not even that close.
Anna Lytic gets up in the afternoon and pokes holes in everything. Sheβs useful. But not for a first draft. I try to lock her in the basement of my mind until itβs time for us to work together to fix something.
I grilled them outdoors. Used my Weber propane grill and kept two of the three burners on to get that hot side / cooler side effect. About a minute on each side of the bok choy on the hot side, then 3 minutes on the cooler side. Came out great! Itβs entered the dinner rotation.
Credit to my amazing wife for this one. She found and made this spam and rice casserole recipe. We didnβt bake it and it ate like a deconstructed musubi. Delicious!

Itβs small potatoes, but reason number 6,355 why these evil fucks have got to go is: Bluesky should largely just be idiots like me making dumb wordplay jokes instead of idiots like me narrating the daily horrors stemming from fascism, corruption, and late-stage capitalism.
Itβs a country album.
Thereβs a disco funk vibe.
Lots of smooth sax solos.
Very political.
Itβs sexy and raunchy.
These elements have no business working in concert with one another, but⦠somehow they do. Sturgill pulled off one of the best protest albums of my lifetime!

I woke up at 4:30 AM and realized that when youβre on a freighter and youβre rooting for a certain member of The Jersey Shore to get into an undefined romantic entanglement, youβre in aβ¦

My agent just called and said that if I could go out there and grope a few people, I would be a hot commodity.
A MIDPOINT can make or break your story. The fun & games are over. You need a big turn to hold the audienceβs interest and propel your story into the 2nd half.
In the Godfather, Michael kills Sollozzo and McCluskey. It raises the stakes and changes him. Forever.

When I was a writersβ assistant on The Office, Greg Daniels hated the rocking grandma trope. It became a bit and I named our internal email after it. So imagine my delight when I watched the trailer for Company Retreat (from 2 of The Office writers, Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky). Rockinβ Grandma!
Shen Yun?
Fair. But I canβt be sued for damages for a 12 year old spoiler (14 years old if you count the book). Thatβs a spoiler old enough for Republicans to put to work in a coal mine.
I posted a thread about midpoint twists this morning. Felt kinda ridiculous but figured it might be a welcome distraction for some.
Thereβs a statute of limitations on spoilers. If itβs been more than 10 years since it came out, no one can be mad about spoilers. Thatβs not just my belief. This was decided in u/MovieMaven v Reddit Nerds and is now settled law.
One of my favorite midpoint twists is the harbor attack in Jaws. Brodyβs son has been threatened and now Brody must face his fear and go to sea.
Do you have a favorite midpoint I missed? Let me know. And remember, if your act 2 is lagging, you probably need a stronger midpoint to bolster it!

Sometimes a midpoint propels the story forward with a crazy ass twist the audience didnβt see coming.
In Gone Girl, Amy is still alive!
π§΅6
So a midpoint doesnβt always have to have the exact same impact. The important things are that it raises the stakes and makes the audience ask the question, βWhat happens next?!β
In Jurassic Park, the power goes out and the T-Rex breaks out of its holding pen.
π§΅5
Sometimes the midpoint gives us a ticking clock, which builds momentum for the second half of the story.
In Back to the Future, Doc says the only way to generate the power they need is with a lightning bolt and Marty remembers the clock tower. This is his only chance to get home!
π§΅4
A midpoint can also be a false defeat. The protagonist has failed so spectacularly or things are so bad, it seems hope is lost. But itβs the wake-up call they need to get their shit together.
In Star Wars, the good guys show up to Alderaan, only to discover itβs been destroyed. Hi Deathstar!
π§΅3
Sometimes the midpoint twist is a false victory. The hero has achieved their goal or is close to achieving it, only to have the rug pulled out from under them.
In Beetlejuice, Adam and Barbara think they have the solution to dealing with the Deetzes when they summon Betelgeuse.

Iβm gonna post a #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread in a little bit. It seems ridiculous to be posting about midpoints when <GESTURES TO EVERYTHING>. But maybe it will be a welcome distraction for some of you. I donβt know. I keep on carrying on like normal when normal has become so fucking fucked up.
Got my Dicks tickets yesterday - was relatively easy. Glad I avoided todayβs shit show.
Stringdusters are fun. When I was working on the Office, Ed Helms came into the writers room and said his friends were gonna perform in the parking lot. Turned out he meant the Stringdusters and they played a handful of songs for like 20 people in the lot.
Strong agree, especially for TV/film writers. I read so much material that feels like "this is what a show sounds like" and not enough that shows off what YOU can do. Mix up your influences! Read like reading is going out of style!*

My 11 year competed against a classmate in a dinner cook off. She made carbonara, sautΓ©ed greens from the school garden, and Oreo tiramisu. Her classmate made garlic bread, pesto pasta, and brownies.
According to the judges, my kid won. According to me, theyβre both winners (but my kid won more).
A steep snowy ski run. At the top of it, a skier is silhouetted against a white cloud.
No #Scriptsky thread this weekend because I was skiing and largely offline all weekend.
