They said the world held its breath when the Prince was born. The wind had stilled in the high grasses beyond the castle walls, banners hanging motionless against the stone as though even the sky dared not disturb the moment. Crickets fell silent in the fields. How I feel typing and retyping and then deleting, only to retype the same paragraph over and over again.
A way I get into my story is by making Pinterest boards. It gives me a feel of the characters, the mood, and theme.

Klaus had long since abandoned the lie that this was accidental because was nothing accidental about the way he found himself here, again and again. Drawn back to the same bed, the same body, the same pair of eyes that had once known him better than anyone living. His mouth pressed to Stefan’s torso in unhurried devotion, open-mouthed kisses that lingered longer than necessary. Each touch of his lips felt like an apology he would never voice properly. His eyes slid shut as he breathed him in, drawing the scent of him deep into his lungs as though it might steady the storm inside his chest. It did the opposite. The steady rhythm of Stefan’s breathing beneath him. The warmth of his skin. The faint shift of muscle under Klaus’ mouth whenever he moved. All of it stirred something painfully tender, something he had spent centuries perfecting the art of burying. They should not be here together. That truth hovered between them like a ghost neither dare to acknowledge. They had ended their relationship with final words, with wounded pride, with the understanding that love, however strong, did not always survive the damage done to it. Continuing this blurred lines. Roughened by a feeling he could not disguise anymore. “I want you.” His mouth moved to Stefan’s ear as he spoke again. “I want you in every way possible to want another being.”

Typically all my stories start out as a random scene I had an idea of. Then I build out the story around it.
Sometimes this fails and I end up dropping the story after a few chapters. Sometimes this works wonderfully and I finish the first draft of a story in a few months.
