#biofuels and #biomass are not the solution to climate change. Weβve known this for decades. So why do Very Serious People keep pushing them??

Climate scientist working for climate justice. Sailor on the side. Topics: plastics, waste, carbon accounting, methane, zero waste, plastic credits, chemical recycling, incineration, and just transition. At GAIA and UC Berkeley. Opinions my own etc.

Biomass is also being promoted as the solution to #plastics with all the same problems plus some extra. I despair at serious researchers who fail to learn from the #biofuels history and end up serving as useful idiots to this grift.
Independently does a lot of work here. Most phds are in an established field and you need a guide to help you shape interesting questions (and rule out ones that have been addressed). Stand on the shoulders of giants etc.

In that context, the Venezuela strike was to secure a replacement source of oil before the Persian Gulf closed.
Am I wrong in thinking that the war on #Iran is meant to be the forever war? Think of all the Orwellian advantages that come from it: political support, corruption, pretext for suspending civil rights at home. "Unconditional surrender" clearly won't happen.
Prediction markets, like prior forms of political gambling, are incompatible with democracy and must be outlawed. This one isn't nuanced.
I was thinking something similar. As people spend more time gaming and interacting with AI will they fail to develop a theory of the mind?

Interesting perspective
Wait, what? Are you referring to the IRIS Dena? That's hardly unarmed, it was in transit (not during an exercise) and it was off the coast of Sri Lanka, not "our own waters." I'm not supporting the attack -- more unnecessary deaths in a war of aggression -- but I hardly think you can blame India.
China pledges to "tackle" overcapacity in petrochemicals but stops short of saying it will actually cut production. That's short on specifics, but certainly sends a warning signal to firms that are currently building out more capacity. finance.yahoo.com/news/explain...
NEW: A Democratic candidate in the primary in Eric Swalwellβs district raised $2M in the first two weeks of her campaign from unknown donors.
Rakhi Israniβs personal political donations have gone to over 10 MAGA and far right candidates including Laura Loomer.

Surely you canβt be expected to work with a company you are suing right? That would be a clear conflict of interest. And if youβre not suing them yet, surely you should be?

On the contrary it allows poll interpreters to spin their own opinions as popular regardless of the data. A problem for the readership but not the writers!
#ThisIsZeroWaste
For International Waste Pickers Day, we are recognizing the work of those who make material recovery possible. They are essential to moving towards zero waste, with solutions that reduce methane emissions and strengthen climate action in the region and beyond.

In January, a #landfill landslide in Cebu, Philippines, killed several #wastepickers. These deaths are unacceptable and avoidable. Improving waste management requires centering the safety of the workers. www.rappler.com/philippines/...
Few people realize that #wastemanagement is one of the most dangerous professions. In Putri Cempo, Indonesia, an #incinerator worker was killed after falling into a sorting machine. www.instagram.com/p/DVa_xPojwF...
Bc industry systematically controls its own data, it's very difficult to spot systemic risks or assign causality to bad outcomes. Data disclosure+verification is a top-priority loophole for the whole sector - a major source of industry political control. Some thoughts stemming from recent research:

That was a short game
a thing historians will marvel about when they study this era is the extent to which the "war is a thing that happens to poorer, browner people" class went about systematically dismantling every aspect of the global political order that confined the costs of war to poorer and browner people
Bullies always expect the bullied to just meekly submit because thatβs what they themselves would do when faced with superior force.
Kind of like when we shot down an Iranian airliner full of civilians.
Today clearly illustrates the basic problem with the US having a powerful military. Men (itβs usually men) with that much power at their command are rarely models of self restraint. If they can kill with impunity, they will.
For those who still think that #chemicals and #climate are separate issues: the worldβs largest GHG emitter is propping up its fossil fuel consumption to makeβ¦#plastic, mostly.
I just canβt even
Next time someone hypes the potential climate benefits of LLMs, maybe think about how they enabled mass fabrication of "public" comments that killed an important climate policy. Just one harmful application of software that can quickly generate lots of truthy-sounding bullshit.
