Session on ice interventions/geoengineering at #assw2025
At best we are buying time - the schemes proposes require enormous amounts of money and time - resources which should instead be used to reduce global emissions.
Research is necessary, but we need a moratorium on field experiments.

Busy for Palle and friends in ilulissat. Important with strong and clear voices in times of extreme pressure. No one wants to be a colony of the USA.
Nice article in The New York Times.
Disappointed to see congress making this a simple matter of mining and dominance in the Arctic - focusing on how many ice breakers it will take to colonise Greenland instead of listening to and supporting the people of Kalaallit Nunaat (who clearly do not want to be colonised by any country).
Europe - time to pick up the slack: Aurora Ruth finishing her doctoral studies at @scrippsocean.bsky.social @ucsandiego.bsky.social and preparing to apply for jobs. Instead, she said, βI am wondering what institutions will even exist in a year.β www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/c...
What a year to be in the USA as a Fulbright Arctic Scholar - not least the discussion of Kalaallit Nunaat, climate, minerals and politics. Hosting a discussion session here at @scrippsocean.bsky.social next week: "Navigating Science in Greenland at a Time of Political Pressure"
A line graph depicting global CO2 emissions from energy and industrial processes, along with projections from 2000 to 2100. The y-axis represents CO2 emissions in gigatons (Gt), while the x-axis marks the years. A highlighted target to keep global temperature rise below 1.5Β°C in 2100 is at 20 GtCOβ/yr by 2030. Also show is a line showing decrease in emissions equivalent to what occurred during the pandemic. The line misses the target by about 8 GtCOβ/yr in 2030.
A constant reminder that even if COβ emissions decreased annually as much as they did during the pandemic lockdown from now to 2030, we still wouldn't meet our emission target to keep global warming below 1.5Β°C.
Denmark and US profitts from more than 100 years of Kryolitt mining (used to produce aluminum) in Kalaallit Nunaat amounts to about 400 billion DKK each (in todays value) according to new documentary released yesterday: "Greenlands White Gold"

Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2024. 2025 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between January and April by looking at the decadal average line positions.
Midweek ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the lowest on record (JAXA data)
β’ about 690,000 kmΒ² below the 2010s mean
β’ about 1,330,000 kmΒ² below the 2000s mean
β’ about 1,910,000 kmΒ² below the 1990s mean
β’ about 2,330,000 kmΒ² below the 1980s mean

A graph of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations at the Mauna Loa observatory, Hawaii, from 1958 to 4th February 2025. It shows carbon dioxide levels rising at an accelerating rate over the decades. This is known to be due to emissions of carbon dioxide from human activity, mainly fossil fuel burning but also deforestation. The first CO2 concentration value in March 1958 was 315 parts per million (ppm). The latest daily value is 426 ppm. The graph also shows a seasonal cycle of a few ppm within each year, which is known to be linked to the growing season in the northern hemisphere causing a temporary uptake of carbon in spring and summer and release in autumn. The graph is produced routinely by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.
Although NOAA's page on atmospheric CO2 levels has vanished, you can still get this vital information from Ralph Keeling's team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego keelingcurve.ucsd.edu
