i. cross-hatched shadows and the lined gloom of a classroom; the desks are empty, and the blackboard blank. the scent of chalk lies heavy here, conveyed by absence or by memory. prominent a practical, undecorated clock, the hand that sweeps the seconds easily mistaken for the one that beats the leaden hours. ii. crops are wilting in the stippled field untended; animals and birds can eat their fill unthreatened. a gate hangs open, and the hedgerow burgeons wild, unkempt. it’s clear no human hand has interfered here for a mint of time.  iii. the land is shattered, lacking pattern in its lumpen jumble. sprawled beneath a sky spit-bitten, scattered bodies lie unnaturally twisted, never to return to school or farm.
