The average punter does not want to build software.
They don't want to prompt software.
They donβt even want to describe software.

If your job was to know when to hit the semicolon key on the keyboard, I'm sad to say that's not an employable skill anymore.
If you shape ideas into tools and art via code, it's really so much better than ever now, and I don't see that changing soon.
I started a new chapter of my Agentic Engineering Patternw guide about anti-patterns - things NOT to do
So far I only have one: Inflicting unreviewed code on collaborators, aka dumping a thousand line PR without even making sure it works first simonwillison.net/guides/agent...
This seems like a super relevant tool to counter the whole "cognitive debt" issue wrt AI coding tools. How feasible do you think it would be to generate these kinds of diagrams highlighting a batch of AI driven changes, e.g. a PR's worth, focusing more on the delta rather than the entire codebase?
This is the way!

You should be looking for velocity, not just speed. Speed lacks direction.
More autonomy requires more constraints, not just bigger specs.

Key to efficient learning is realizing how we ACTUALLY learn, not just what FEELS like learning. I wrote a Claude Skill for some friends to help them think about this and they've liked it -- see Principles for some directions you could explore

Short musings on "cognitive debt" - I'm seeing this in my own work, where excessive unreviewed AI-generated code leads me to lose a firm mental model of what I've built, which then makes it harder to confidently make future decisions simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/15/...

Buckle up. This year the way we write software will change.
In this video, I map out where software engineering is heading, introduce a practical maturity ladder and zoom in on essential skills if you want to stay effective in 2026 and beyond.

I have Gas Town derangement syndrome and spent the last few weeks writing thousands of words on agent orchestration patterns; how they shift our bottlenecks and force us to ask whether and when we should stop looking at code

You can give it examples of tests in "your style" to mitigate 3.
Hard agree on 4 though, you just saved yourself some monkey work

It takes nine principles, one heuristic, three foundations, one pattern and three practices to practice truly Continuous Delivery.

If this happens during an interactive session I immediately kill the session and start a new one. Context window compaction always leads to noticeable degraded quality in my experience
This resource contains the best patterns & heuristics to make it work:

Not serena-related, but I've been working on opening up my fsi.exe sessions over mcp and it has been very fun programming this way: github.com/jovaneyck/fs...
F# folk - I've started a PR to add F# support to the Serena MCP server, that effectively allows the use of the F# language server from coding agents.

Please be welcome to contribute to get this over the line.
