Honestly, and the teams were so well matched!

She believed I could do anything, and I believed *her*. Now that she's gone, I have to be the one to say it. To believe it.

But then I remember something my late spouse used to say to me when I was job searching.

Not a platitude. Not even a compliment. Delivered as fact because she believed it.
