MekaCentiped, Ray Harryhausen vibes.
Clair Obscur gameplay was 95% blueprints and used Sequencer for a ton of things including battle abilities.

Here's a small portion of an animated bumper I made to promote a video game from @owlcatgames.bsky.social (Blind Descent). Seeing the latest advances in generative AI and how they've invaded space, I feel lucky to have at least produced this little piece from start to finish ๐ฅฒ.
The box art for the LucasArts space combat simulator Star Wars: X-Wing features several X-wings and TIE fighters engaged in a dogfight with green and orange laser fire against a vibrant purple nebula.
X-Wing (Totally Games/LucasArts) was released circa 33 years ago.
I find it hard to accept that so many of my fond memories are a third of a century old. ๐
Unreal graph showing the SerializeItem nodes that handle custom blueprint-centric data.
Being able to add custom data for the save/load in any blueprint is also insanely useful. It just works. Or this function can be used to post-process the serialization.
You'll have to add automatic component serialization where the actor itself gets handled, but that's not terrible.
I see this talk's technique rarely mentioned in the wild, so it makes me a little nervous, but if it's what they recommend AND it works with cross-platform save interfaces, great!
This is a super useful Epic talk on savegame serialization. I've reimplemented a basic version and it does seem you can store off object references and reconstruct them fairly easily. ๐
Having a human-readable copy of every save file is SO USEFUL.

Big agree! I reference it a ton, and so have teams I've been a part of. I get hyped every time I watch it.
Oh no.
If they absolutely must use insane stats to build all those systems that enable that output, more power to them.
I really like how it isn't afraid to ask something of players in order to deliver such a unique experience. That "pre-digested" quote from Kojima feels relevant.
Haha. For me at least, it still offers a crazy sense of adventure and the unknown that seems largely lost, even in MMOs. So much to learn whether you're a miner, pirate, ratter, etc. And all the social collisions and single server make everything feel so alive, even if it's just largely local chat.
If I log back in I'm pretty sure I'll be in wormhole space, in a stealth ship I no longer remember how to fly, with probes I no longer remember how to use.
Are you me?
a dreary sky, a lonely grey concrete tower in the center. there are chambers on the base that a person can enter with stairs leading up to them
a brutalist concrete lobby, with nice carpet, furniture, and plants hanging from suspended planters. the lighting is warm and welcoming
a cavernous gallery room, with a high ceiling and artificial sun panels pouring warm diffused light into the room. there is a statue of a floating octahedron in the center. plants and vines hang down from the walls. the room branches off into other chambers.
view of a tall, oddly shaped hallway. carpet down the whole length. on the left there is seating, a cabinet, and a large painting of some abstract rock formation.

I am REALLY down this rabbit hole now. Chrome gets angry about some of these downloads so be careful. But the screens are really something else.

Their terrain tiling workflow and art is so good.
Without that insane HUD it's like a completely different game. WOW.
Damn this is quite an aesthetic. I started with IV but I was not familiar with III's game.
A few screengrabs from RyanUkAus' wonderful vid. Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere, original or gutted international version, remains a dispensary of timeless vibes. Peak Namco era.
Lego version of House of the Dying Sun's main shit, the Executor fighter.
Not sure how I missed this but a player named Vezeto made a sick lego version of the Executor class interceptor from House of the Dying Sun.
It's CRAZY close to the in-game model. Damn.

If you find an answer to this, please let me know. A lot of my old prototypes are on that very same version (5.6) too and it's a total nightmare trying to upgrade.
