What is scientific excellence? Why does there seem to be no good definition? Does it depend on context?
This is a document that will hopefully rally people, give guidance, and spark discussion in local/national/regional contexts.
There's enough evidence on why we need to change, there's not enough things being changed. Time to get to work. 😉
It's ok if it sounds utopian.
It's ok if we don't make it 100% to this ideal.
As long as we have the targets set.
As long as we learn and adapt along the way.
This is not the final word in research cultures. This is the beginning of the work we have to do.
Once that was done, the next step was to set the targets. In today's environment of quick wins, KPIs, and short-term policy horizons, we felt it was important to set a vision for the long term of the sector, to create something aspirational and inspirational.
So we started with values. Values underlie all cultures, including research cultures, and getting that foundation set would be a crucial first step. Openly stating the key values of positive and inclusive research cultures seemed to resonate well with the community.
There's not a ton of space here to go deep, so I'll post more on LinkedIn, but I'll do my best here as well.
The goal of this vision is "Setting the goalposts for collaborative efforts towards an inclusive and supportive research culture for everyone in the sector!"
Alright, it's finally out after a good chunk of work: "A Vision and Framework for Research Cultures." Written as a part of the Science Europe Working Group on #ResearchCulture, with all of the great collaboration and teamwork of the group!

A word of caution: it might feel like that grant/paper/review cannot possibly wait over the Christmas period, but you can't get time with friends and family back. You likely won't be like "really wish I'd submitted that" in 5 years time but you might regret not spending time with those you love.
