Most of the media coinciding with the UCCA Middle Distance exhibition are on WeChat or other Chinese platforms. This one is in English, on YouTube, and very well done:

The Middle Distance show at UCCA contains a 17m (50’) xuan paper screen where a projection scrolls through the entire Yangtze River series (all 42 handscrolls) over the course of almost 6 hours.
Here’s the official poster. For fans of my art this is the exhibition to see. If you are on the fence about visiting Beijing this spring …

This year’s Halloween pumpkin carving is the “肚痛帖—a masterpiece of the wild cursive style—written by Tang dynasty calligrapher Zhang Xu, in which he tells of a horrible stomachache which he tries to remedy with some rhubarb soup.
Here is the text:
“忽肚痛不可堪,不知是冷热所致,欲服大黄汤,冷热俱有益。如何为计,非临床”

Arnold Chang’s solo show opening in March 🌹🌹🌹 It has been a joy to collaborate (for over 15 years now!). With one of our collaborations included in the show, I am honored to be included as a guest (along with Jackson Pollock!).

The Year of the Snake is upon us (January 29) … this lunar image evokes the ouroboros (the serpent eating its own tail) as a symbol of cyclicality and re-creation. With each revolution we draw upon the past (for better or worse) and evolve. Happy Chinese New Year!

Here we see the wood and path leading to the home of Jerome Silbergeld, Professor Emeritus in Chinese Art, Princeton University www.qiumai.net/qj/merwyn.html
The Chinese New Year of the Dragon begins on February 10. A reminder to all you dragons out there to wear something red (i.e., bracelet, necklace, nail polish, tighty-reddies, ...) to double your good fortune.
All of the real world horror surrounding us called for a more peaceful pumpkin this year.
I experimented with light characters on a dark background for the new piece as well, which was striking but a bit too dramatic for the message of the poem … so kept the dark writing on the lightened background. There will be more to come!
