I hate to pull rank here, but as a trans woman, I disagree with basically all of this. I realize the plaintiffs in the suit are also trans, but frankly I doubt they drafted it. I'm not saying I think sex and gender are totally interchangable concepts, but for the purposes of legal construction I think it actually makes more sense to acquiesce to the government's preference toward sex, and simply argue that sex is not immutable, and is actually quite easily altered. After all, Dawg I'm wearing a hat with buncha cheerleaders hittin' Pigeon Pose, you really think I'm ready to discuss transgender metaphysics? You can take the hat off.

In the meantime, with the reassurance of US self-restraint gone, other states will in all likelihood begin seeking to counterbalance US power, in ways that have not meaningfully happened despite IR theory's expectations for a unipolar order.

It will work more or less in the short term. But eventually indirect means and the use of standoff force will no longer be enough to compel concessions, let alone cooperation.

At that point, the US will be forced to escalate to direct imperial control, or risk becoming a paper tiger.

But in other very important ways, Trump represents a qualitative break in US forpol, similar to GWB and the neocon crusade but stripped of their legitimizing rhetoric of democracy promotion.

That matters, because it removes even the socializing mask that has made US power palatable to other states.

my view on this is that publishers should stop it with the 80k wordcount obsession, so many contemporary non-fic books are obviously 40-50k pieces of work stretched to the extent that they become very boring to read - just let people write cheaper, shorter books! www.theguardian.com/books/2025/d...
