Black and white photo that has been handcoloured. Showing a greenlandic woman looking back over her shoulder at her baby sitting in the amaut (the hood of the mothers parka).
From DK NationalMuseum "Serie 310: De 5 nord. Riger. Kolor."."V. Richter. København.", "48. Moder med Barn i Amaut". . Probably from the 1920s - 1930s.
In Greenland babys half birthday (at 6 months) is an important celebration.
If a baby survived this important milestone, there was a good chance that it would thrive and live to see many birthdays.

Photograph of the mountain Sermitsiaq near Nuuk, the capital. In the foreground a brown and yellow landscape, in the middleground the blue fjord. In the background the mountain with a snow covered peak.
Greenlandic is closely related to Canadian Inuit languages such as Inuktitut. 1) variety is Kalaallisut, or West Greenlandic. 2) variety is Tunumiit oraasiat, or East Greenlandic. The language of the Inughuit (Thule Inuit), Inuktun or Polar Inuit, is a recent arrival and a dialect of Inuktitut.

Arnarulunnguaq at the start of the 5. Thule expedition. She is wearing a traditional north greenlandic fur outfit. At this time she would be around 25 years old.
Photo by Therkel Mathiassen (1892-1967)/Arktisk Institut.
2) Arn. was probably born around 1896 to a nomadic family. Her father died when she was around 7 y.o. Her mother, Aleqasersuaq, would not be able to feed them all and to avoid them all suffering a slow hunger-death she decided to end her daughters life. Her brothers pleading saved her life.

Black and white photograph of Arnarulunnguaq in fur coat. She is wearing the medal she recieved in 1925.
I have not been able to find further data on the picture from the web.
Shortly after arriving in Denmark, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was immediately hospitalized. She stayed until 1925, receiving the Silver Medal of Merit.
She returned to Thule and married Karl Peary (son of Robert Peary). She was weakened by tuberculosis and died in 1933 at the age of 37

Brintbombefly nedstyrtet i Thule
Nedstyrtningen af den amerikanske brintbombemaskine ved Thule-basen den 21. januar 1968.
Short film about the crash of the US B-52 at Thule Air Base, Jan 21, 1968. The plane, carrying four 1.1-ton nuclear bombs, disappeared beneath the ice. The radioactive plutonium spread throughout the crash area and led to hunting and fishing bans being issued

Black and white photo of Arnarulunnguaq, probably from around 1924.
She is seen in a hat, fashionable at the time, and a european coat. She is smiling at the camera looking slightly to one side.

1) Many have the impression that Arctic exploration was mens work. The best and most successful expeditions (looking at you Kunuunnguaq) had women aboard.
The best known woman is probably Arnarulunnguaq/den lille kvinde/the small woman.

Waiting for the kettle to boil.
Black and white photograph. A man is sitting in the snow watching the primus. Three people are standing, also waiting for the kettle to boil. In the background is a bundle of skins and maybe a tent. Seen standing: Inujek, Qavigarssuaq, Arnarulunnguaq and Helge Bangsted.
Hikoligjuaq, arktic Canada.
She turned out to be a talented scientific staff, participating in botanical collections, conservation of zoological objects and archaeological excavations. An effort that was publicly appreciated by Knud Rasmussen.
In 1924 reaching Nome, Alaska, the exped. returned to Copenhagen Denmark.

Arnarulunnguaq I
Arnarulunnguaq (1896-1933) var med på hele 5. Thule-ekspeditionen 1921-1924.
Arn. was not only an expert cooking under extreme conditions, she could maintainin fur clothing, build peat cabins and enduring (having to run next to the sledge, just like the men).
A short film clip of Arn. playing with a dog in the snow.

The expedition lasted two years. The three persons who completed the entire 18,000 kilometer long 5th Thule Expedition were Knud Rasmussen, Arnarulunnguaq and her cousin Qaavigarsuaq Miteq. It covered N. Greenland and Canada and a short visit to Sibiria.
