i couldn’t understand why a book like that could be taken so seriously by full grown adults, when i, as a 10 year old kid, could see right through it. it was ancient and boring, with carnage and gore thrown in for shock. “love thy neighbor” made sense, but that was about it. the rest was unnecessary

when we’d read watered down versions of bible stories in class, i would look them up online after school. i read stories of murder, rape, mass infanticide and descriptions of male genitalia and horselike emissions. god bashing humanity repeatedly for his own amusement. for our own good. for our sin.

then i realized that their purpose was a failure. meant to isolate and indoctrinate, but the result was free expression of thought on the playground. a lot of those kids grew up to leave their religion, the ones who stayed had no choice. their families would disown them if they chose another path.

we all had these questions. students discussed things with each other without fear of consequence, and i remember many of them feeling like their parents just wanted to control them, like they’d been lied to just like santa and the easter bunny. i was so confused as to why catholic schools existed,

everyone was terrified of their parents and even though our teachers were pretty tame, they also couldn’t be trusted with questions about the validity of it all. i had been exposed to secular people of all kinds at that point, so i knew good people who weren’t religious. were they destined to burn?
