๐ข New article alert! Freshwater salinization is an emerging global threat affecting ~1/3 of freshwater ecosystems. Yet, the salinity tolerance of most inland fishes remains poorly understood.

This work was a collaborative effort of an amazing team of researchers from different areas of expertise. Led by @rturba.bsky.social and @cmarin.bsky.social with the participation of @elinatakola.bsky.social @michaelgbertram.bsky.social among others. It was a really fun and enlightening experience.
We discuss how non-native English speakers face invisible labour, higher rejection rates, and limited access to resources and networks, reinforcing structural asymmetries. We also reflect on how open science can unintentionally reproduce inequalities.
Just published in Peer Community Journal: A perspective on Global NorthโSouth inequalities in science and how language and funding barriers shape who gets to participate in global knowledge production. ๐๐

This work is a product of the INCT โ Knowledge Center for Biodiversity, supported by @cnpq-oficial.bsky.social and partners.
The INCT aims to strengthen the link between biodiversity science, policy, and society in Brazil.

๐ข New paper out!
We propose a five-step roadmap to strengthen invasion science in Brazil, a megadiverse country facing escalating impacts from invasive species, aiming to build a coordinated, science-based and socially engaged biosecurity system.

Fresh off the press! Our perspective in @natrevbiodiv.nature.com discusses the wealth of information on biodiversity contained in historical sources, and its integration for long-term ecological knowledge and biodiversity conservation. A thread on the paper and what led to it:

I've always admired her. She was such an intelligent, strong female scientist. Inspired hundreds of women to join science. But besides all of that she was so kind to everyone. This world often sees kindness as a weakness, but a person like her shows that our words are absorbed better if they're soft
It's really sad. But she has lived a truly incredible life...

Our new paper @asn-amnat.bsky.social develops a Grand Unified Theory including both exploitative and interference competition doi.org/10.1086/737628. The R* rule of ecology (that 2 species cannot coexist on a single resource), is widely broken, including via a new trade-off we describe. 1/9
๐ฃ Hot off the press at #ProcB!
๐ Our study checked data/code-sharing policies in 275 eco/evo journals and compliance in Proc B (n=2,340) & Ecology Letters (n=571). Policies exist, but clarity and strictness vary, affecting reproducibility.

Super pride to be part of the team responsible for this paper. It's a much needed contribution to fish invasions
Proud of this #OpenAccess paper where we experimentally show that invasive Gambusia impacts a threatened cyprinodontiform fish through water quality degradation and competition. Led by @irene-gil-luna.bsky.social, Lluรญs Zamora and myself @greco-udg.bsky.social @iea-udg.bsky.social. #bioinvasions
1/ Invasional meltdown is a popular but nebulous concept in invasion ecology. It involves multiple direct & indirect mechanisms, yet it is rarely studied beyond simple pairwise facilitations.
In a new paper, we expand the concept & offer testable hypotheses: redpath-staff.mcgill.ca/ricciardi/Ri...
July's meeting of the EcoAqua research group. Lots of interesting talks, amazing research and fun interactions. I've talked a bit about Open Science and we all made some drawings (sooo glad that we all focused on an academic and not an artistic life..haha). Looking forward to the next meetings!
Super interesting talk from @oldenfish.bsky.social at the @iea-udg.bsky.social on bounty programs for "controlling" species. Glad to have you here!
Amazing. Joining now!
