Loudness determines density. If you are making pop -14 will sound wimpy if making ambient then it can be just the ticket.
-14 is just an arbitrary number and after all it’s not a science project you are doing. It’s art not a mathematical formula.
I guess it can be challenging if your listening environment is flawed in some way. In any case, each song is a different animal and will have its own sweet spot sometimes -14 is what’s appropriate sometimes it isn’t.
