The neck gusset speedweve repair from the outside, showing a neat square of a thicker white linen thread woven as a patch directly onto the finer white linen fabric of the smock. The tail end was woven in on the diagonal, clearly seen crossing from one corner to the other.

It’s clear from this image that the darning overlaps the gusset seam, hopefully relieving some of the tension placed on this spot in the garment, which led to the initial tear.
A more traditional darning method is up close here, though hard to see (which means I chose my yarn well!). The darning yarn is a bit darker, but the right gauge and color family to blend in well with the plaid twill. This was a smaller hole/weak point, and was reinforced with running stitches along the warp and weft of the fabric, mimicking the motion of the initial weave, though not perfectly. It’s a little easier to blend in with this method, though it’s less neat than when using the speedweve. I’m not sure if it is more or less stable than the speedweve method, since the actual “weaving” is less structured but there are more points of contact between the fabric and the repair yarn. With the speedweve the only points of contact between the fabric and the repair yarn are along the edges of the repair, but the repair itself is a sturdy plain weave.
Both darning methods are centered in this image! The fabric being repaired is a plaid twill in cream, tan, orange, and navy wool. The repair yarn is a brown alpaca and silk blend. The speedweve method is the easiest to spot, as it is bubbled up from being on the darning mushroom and is a tidy square of brown plain weave in the middle of a plaid twill intersection. Structurally, that’s 1:1 over, under on top of a 2:2 over, under offset by one. In the upper right hand corner, there’s a dark colored disruption of the twill, showing the subtler darning method reinforcing a weak spot or small hole found while repairing the larger hole with the speedweve. So far, I’ve been primarily using the speedweve darning loom for true holes, and the loom less darning method for very small holes and weak spots. I like to sandwich the damage with speedweve patches on double sided items like this especially.
Mending this week was mostly with the Speedweve as I tried to figure out how to do it for the camera on the request of my professor. I repaired a tear at the neck gusset of my smock with a speedweve repair inside & out, sandwiching the damaged material. Then I darned the wool blanket a couple ways.
We see a pair of blue jeans where the bottom of the legs are very worn and ripped.
The same pair of blue jeans as the first pic now have patches hand stitched in behind the tear, some of the damaged part cut off to get to the correct length for the short legs that usually inhabit them, and the hem stitched back on. There is still a tear going up the leg, but there’s no gap now and it all looks much more tidy.
