We have an obsession with filling characters’ backstories with elements that predict their future outcomes. Character X’s greatest struggles are all related to event Y in their backstory. Every single new plot element is just “Darth Vader is Luke’s father.” We need something new.
There are so few unanswered questions now, and that’s a shame! The only way forward is either a major shake-up that upsets every established element of the universe, or the introduction of a whole new set of questions.
And in Metroid, the mysteries are solved WAY too much. With all the new information in Dread, now it seems like the entire story is predestined. Samus’s whole journey feels laid out for her. Instead of introducing new mysteries, they introduce new threads connecting everything.
I love lore as much as the next guy. Early Metroid was so light on concrete detail that every single new fact feels precious. I have a strong urge to devour every single scan and untangle every single thread. But mysteries are so much less compelling when solved.
This video is so important for the future of Metroid.
Metroid is plagued by “the thing you remember is back” plot beats. Everything is connected to everything else. The mystery of the Metroids/Chozo/X is long dead. Metroid should be weird and mysterious.
