And the last twist: most thesis steps alter your mage. Diabolism mutates your desires, Chronomancy rewrites your past, Alchemy makes you obsess over the flaws you see in yourself.
It's a race: will you complete your thesis before you lose the things that pushed you to pursue it in the first place?

A mask, a knife, a ribbon, a chain, and broken mirrors.

But many mages aren't friendly and you might not have ideas worth trading – and that's where it gets spicy. See, there's plenty of ways to make the trade uneven, ranging from being paid Ideas to do another mages' bidding, to beating other mages in a duel, to sending your imps to steal from them.

Early thesis steps are pretty generous with this, but later ones get real stringent. So what do you do? Well, a friendly mage might spend time working with another, letting them trade Ideas at the end of the scene.

(And also encouraging players to have their PCs interact!)

What makes this juicy is that each thesis step requires Ideas. Each Idea (a number from 1-6) is an occult inspiration in a mage's head and you can easily get one by exploring the Manor – but that one will be random, and maybe your next step needs three odd numbers, or a matching set, or a sequence.

A mage places a mask on a demon. The chain around the demon's neck wraps around the art and seals around the mage's neck too.

So! Each mage has a Thesis. Could be Necromacy, bringing the dead to life. Could be Alchemy, perfecting themselves. Could be Apocalypse, ending the world. Each one has 5 steps: Diabolism has you binding a demonic liaison, making contact with a greater demon, inviting them into this world, etc.

Was asked what my favorite mechanic was in Mooncroft Manor (www.backerkit.com/c/projects/c...) and I thought I'd talk about it here too!

Specifically: the way this game treats research and discovery as a source of social tension is extremely fun and really drives play.

I backed this and you should too! I am at least honest in my biases from helping playtest! Excellent structure of play and resolution, great for PBP or at the table, absolutely stellar for making a nuanced, complicated ambitious little freak and putting them in a situation. Check it out!
