Thanks to Music Box Films, Hook Publicity, and everyone who helped bring the terrific "Late Shift" -- and director Petra Volpe! -- to the Picture House last night. A great, scalpel-sharp drama -- think "The Pitt" without the gore --about a valiant nurse in a broken system. Opens March 20.

Instead of yet another faithful "The Magnificent Seven" remake how about one in which an American immigrant community hires people to protect them from ICE? Would watch.

Thanks to Greenwich Entertainment and all who helped bring "Dreams" to the The Picture House last night (and director Michel Franco in for a Zoom). A dark, stark, and sometimes shocking tale of exploitation and obsession, with an excellent Jessica Chastain and ABT star Isaac Hernandez. Opens Friday.

I'm willing to believe it, as most of today's programming -- Julius Caesar, Marie Antoinette, The Private Life of Henry VIII -- is definitely despot-oriented!

Thanks to Focus Features and everyone who helped bring "Midwinter Break" to The Picture House last night (and thanks to director Polly Findlay for Zooming in for a Q-and-A). A marvelous film about doubt, faith and tiny miracles, with Ciaran Hinds and the goddess Lesley Manville. Opens Feb 20.

America is rich in regional cultures -- Appalachian, Cajun, Western, even East Coast Italian-American and Southern California surfer. Our pop culture honors all of them. So why does a musical number based on Puerto Rican style and music drive the right wing crazy? I can't imagine.

I apologize for saying an ICE agent brutally kicked that small dog. Apparently, it was a US Marshall. I should have known better. An ICE agent would have waited until the animal left the scene and then just shot it.

Officials say the ICE agent caught, on camera, kicking a miniature Schnauzer and sending it flying with a broken rib, acted "without malice." Would love to gather a group of dog owners and engage that ICE agent in a frank and spirited discussion. Without malice, of course.

Don't think I ever voted for one, but I kind of liked seeing Republican candidates on the ballot. Two-party system, and all that. Now I see (R) after a name and it's like seeing (Confederate) or (National Socialist). Instant revulsion. The GOP needs to disband, rebrand and start over. Or maybe not.

Another season of Film Club at The Picture House, and thanks to everyone at Sony Pictures Classics and Falco who helped us start off with "The President's Cake," a delicate, carefully observed neorealist drama that, while wholly original, may remind you of Jafar Panahi's classic "The White Balloon"

You're very kind, Farran. I think Hitchcock's greatest casting skill was seeing something true but mostly hidden in his star's character. Suspicion, Notorious, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest -- Grant's always a little slippery, isn't he? But then charm is a kind of deception.

I don't know about that, but somehow I can imagine him calling someone "pally," right before he had his goons beat him up. Or did I just see that in "The Big Lebowski"?

Not that this nation is big on honoring treaties β even when sane people are in charge β but as part of the 1916 deal to buy the Virgin Islands from Denmark, we agreed, in writing, that they would continue to have complete economic and political control of Greenland.

Where have you gone, Clark Gable? Hollywood redefines what it means to be a movie star
The modern movie-star archetype is more like the undefinable TimothΓ©e Chalamet.
It's awards season, and time to celebrate the craft of great acting. But save some applause for those who have the equally important -- and rapidly disappearing -- job of being a movie star. www.njarts.net/where-have-y...

Note to GOP: You almost got it right. No, you can't drop off your child at school and later discover the nurse secretly had their gender changed. But -- close! -- you CAN drop off your child at school and later get shot in the face and killed by an ICE agent.
