I get that it wouldn’t have passed. I get that it is a more complicated section to build. I am not disputing that. And despite that I still think it would have been a better project for the first segment of an eventual statewide HSR network. But it’s just my opinion and I could be wrong
High speed trains are proven technology I don’t think the first line segment needed to be able to run absolute top speed to “test” trains. I accept that there were political restrictions that shaped the choices that were made. In an ideal world I think LA-SD should have been phase 1.
LA to SD is a stronger demand pair and the Surfliner probably needs a replacement anyways so I think it would have been smarter to start there. But at this point it’s too late and the state should just commit to finding the project itself imo
