Outside Gracie Mansion in New York City today, far right influencer Jake Lang staged an anti Islam protest with a small group of supporters, appearing with a goat and drawing a large counter protest. Homemade smoke devices were thrown into the crowd at one point. Multiple arrests took place.

Just prior to his death in 1939, Pius XI was preparing an encyclical denouncing antisemitism, drafted in large part by Fr John LaFarge, a Jesuit born in Rhode Island (ahem), and known for his 1937 book Interracial Justice: A Study of the Catholic Doctrine of Race Relations.

Pius XI's encyclical may have had some impact on Catholics in Europe, and maybe even in Germany, in terms of condemning antisemitism, but it was nowhere even close to the kind of vision of Jewish-Catholic engagement put forth in Nostra Aetate. It may have hardened theological anti-Judaism even more.
