Day 19: A song that feels warm
My grandma lived near the spot in this song, a few towns over. Twenty years gone nowβ¦

I assume there arenβt exceptions for an MFA holder with lots of teaching experience (shoulda finished that PhD!). Too bad, I check a LOT of the boxes. If Iβm wrong, maybe Iβll get my materials togetherβ¦

Day 18: A song that is your guilty pleasure
I hadnβt seen the video until today, and now itβs more of a guilty pleasure. Not because of Sweeney, just because Iβm a sucker for a good midway scene.
Graveyard, Halsey

Day 18: A song that feels cold
Maybe itβs the tremolo, but this reminds me of cold winds blowing across the plains.
Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Gordon Lightfoot

I can 100% confirm the accuracy here - except itβs worse than 12 hour days.
I do go gig work for these joints when I need to get bills paid, and they push for 100 hr weeks.
Such a great album, that track is surely one of the (many) highlights.
Iβve only seen this building a few times, and not since 2007, an even in that fog I immediately knew what it was while scrolling past. Iconic, indeed.

Day 17: A song that feels claustrophobic
(Really, this whole album leaves no room to breathe)
Harrison Bergeron, Snapcase (1997)

Across a filmmaking career spanning more than five decades, Frederick Wiseman β who has died at 96 β refined a uniquely austere, quietly radical form of documentary cinema
www.bfi.org.uk/features/fre...
I just learned that Frederick Weisman passed today. This is truly the passing of an innovator, a giant of documentary. Titicut Follies put him on the map, but his method and continued output made him a legend.
RIP FW

Obviously, memory is a transient thing, and I could have this very wrong. But youβll just have to listen to the tapes.
For some reason, I have a memory from my research in #TheConversation that it was Robert Duvall who suggested that Coppola cast Harrison Ford in a bit part in the film. Harrison was working as a cabinet maker at the time, but impressed, and his role was expanded.
RIP, Mr Duvall, an actorβs actor.
Just show them clips from Bedtime for Bonzo and ask which one became
President. Also cover his time as SAG president and backroom deals that made him wealthy while screwing the membership.
I mean, I hated Bill Viola the first time it was screened for me. I didnβt care for Brakhageβs hand painted films. I questioned Dorskyβs Alaya.
Iβve since spent hours in BV installations, programmed Dorsky as much as I can, and gave my first lecture as an MFA student on Text Of Light.
Of course, I havenβt taught since 2018z
The job isnβt to create movie fans, itβs to create an environment for understanding the medium, in all its breadth and depth.
I included these films because I think itβs important for students to be offered films in context that they might not come to on their own.
Iβve also had extremely unimpressed reactions to Maya Deren in Experimental classes.
I did it all the time. I taught an Auteur theory class on John Cassavetes at a small midwestern school, and spent the 2nd half with βheirsβ. We watched Matewan, Killer of Sheep, Old Joy, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Stranger than Paradise, and Gummo.
I donβt think anyone liked more than 2-3 films.
