i really wish pr stopped making press do things with content creators/influencers. two different perspectives going for different things shouldn't be treated as the same, the functions we serve are different.

Gang, the samples that we receive as journalists are not a profit center. If I can't donate product I've used to do my work, or if I can't warehouse it, I don't get to make money on it. That's not how this works. If you're doing that and consider yourself a member of the media... please don't.

Consumptive Capitalism On MAHA and Expensive Suffering -- A Guest Post by Sara Silverstein

Professor @sarasilverstein.bsky.social is someone to whom I listen on issues of health and history. This essay helps us to situate the present American health drama in the history of health care, and thereby to see much more clearly what we face.

An Elite Dangerous player discovered a way to write new stories into the margins of the 12-year-old space sandbox, and now thousands are testing it How the nearly 9,000 players on the Distant Worlds 3 expedition are contributing to the birth of something new.

Thanks @tjcwilde.bsky.social for the opportunity to share something with the @pcgamer.com audience. Latest from @frontierdev.bsky.social's Elite Dangerous is the breakout success of MetaElite, a player-made engine for telling stories on top of the 12-year-old spacefaring MMO.

I have zero reason to believe that an AI couldn't "come up with Tiny Towns or Flip Seven or Cubitos". I can prompt any of several AIs RIGHT NOW and get ideas for games as good as those. The gaming industry doesn't exist because humans create otherwise unobtainable ideas. It exists because many many previous games exist, feed into the minds of designers, who produce new variants on those themes. People then apply risk capital against those ideas to see if there's a product market fit. Sometimes there is, and sometimes there is not. (In fact, much more often than not).

Extremely occasionally (twice in my lifetime: D&D and Magic: the Gathering) a human has produced an all new form of gaming entertainment. Those moments are so rare and incandescent that they echo across decades.

Game publishing isn't an industry of unique special ideas. It's an industry about execution, marketing, and attention to detail. All things AIs are great at.

Ryan Dancey, a more than 30-year veteran of the tabletop gaming industry, has lost his COO job at publisher AEG a day after saying AI could generate game ideas as good as his company’s titles Tiny Towns and Cubitos:

I'm not a games journalist. I'm a podcaster. The way I want to preserve these little pieces of gamers' memories is this show and I'm feeling so fulfilled by it right now.

Folks seem to like it. If you haven't given it a shot, search for "Last Save Lounge" wherever you get your podcasts.
