Yep, for years living as a Canadian in the US I pointed to the mottos as evidence of deep underlying differences in perspective.
@tammylc
Booze and cocktail history nerd. I host the My Tiny Bottles podcast & YouTube series (mytinybottles.com), and teach cocktail classes online and in-person as Tammy's Tastings (tammystastings.com). Also a SMOF, so may occasionally post about SF conrunning.

It's amazing people will claim "Canada and the USA have the same culture" and then on something as fundamental as "do you trust your fellow citizens to be good" we are further apart than any other two countries
This is bonkers, and totally irresponsible. 10-16 oz of whiskey per person PLUS 2 cocktails? WTAF?
I've been to Sunken Harbor, it was great! Clover Club too, of course. Bar at Gage and Tollner is on my list, but I've never been to Long Island Bar and it's actually closest to our dinner restaurant.
I've added it to my list, so if we don't make it this time there's always next time!
Alas, Google maps says Leyenda is permanently closed. Thanks for the thumbs up on Long Island Bar!
Hey NYC folks - recommendations for a good spot in downtown Brooklyn or Cobble Hill to get a cocktail before dinner on Wednesday? Thinking about Long Island Bar, thoughts or suggestions?
No shade to the Swifties out there, but I had to listen to two solid hours of Taylor Swift on shuffle at the nail salon this afternoon and I was barely keeping my eyes open by the end.
That's an awesome glass!
Thank god I didn't put only two kumquats next to that cucumber or this picture might have been flagged by the modesty censors.
I just spent a very intense 12 hours staring at Zoom, Slack, and Whatsapp screens while helping to run the online half of a conference. I have to do it again tomorrow. My brain is mush. I have now had girl dinner and a Black Manhattan and am officially completely useless.
I get it, but I assume that's to offset the gas taxes you're not paying, and which help maintain the roads you're still driving on. So some upcharge seems reasonable, and the benefits of lower pollution don't generate income (directly) that can be captured for that purpose.
The media itself has worked hard to blur those lines over the last couple decades. There's not enough news to fill a 24 hour cable news network, so they fill it with opinion that's treated like news.
Lamb burger with homemade tzatziki and arugula + roasted broccoli with a red pepper feta spread we impulse bought at the store.
We've had lamb burgers in the freezer since the fall, and the stove in this rental house is severely underpowered. Plus enough of the snow melted to make digging out a path feasible.
March 1st is the start of grilling season, right?
@evanrail.bsky.social can you help?
Women in general are way outnumbered in live music, let alone older women.
Not gonna lie, totally digging this band made up entirely of post-menopausal women. Isabel Fryszberg and The Uncommons at a Tranzac Club in Toronto.
If anyone wants to help make that a reality, please join the mailing list for Worldcon in Africa! forms.gle/DdC5sy8gHZbT...
Many US Worldcons have offered staff rates. I think many are shit at consistently communicating that information to staff.
And also looking for duplicate memberships within the current year Worldcon. We try to eliminate all chance of double nominating before noms open, but we will also audit the votes cast in case any slip through. 2/2
So many LOCs from me this month... I think under our rules you can have as many WSFS accounts as you want. But each person can only vote once. We Hugo Admins spend a lot of time de-duplicating the list, both between the current and just completed membership (both of which have nom rights)... 1/
But if it was a new membership created for the new person on Feb 2, then it would not, as the system uses timestamp to determine eligibility. This could be overwritten, but I think the constitution is silent on the matter - members vote, not memberships.
So new rules were bent for Liz. To the question of how to deal with a membership purchased Jan 30 and transferred Feb 2 - that's probably up to the processes of the convention. If the transfer is managed by simply changing the account details on the OG, then it would have rights in LA's system.
That membership may be transferred only prior to the opening of Hugo Award nominations in the winning convention, and (b) natural person holding a WSFS membership dies, the WSFS membership may be transferred to the estate of the decedent. 2/2
Re transferring a duplicate membership - we ratified this last BM:
1.5.2 WSFS memberships held by natural persons may not be transferred, except in the following circumstances: (a) when a person purchases a WSFS membership for someone without providing a name or purchases a duplicate membership. 1/2
I've never played elevator sports, but the theme of one of the ConFusions I chaired was "Homecoming at Sci-Fi High" and we did invent a sport that used hotel luggage carts for the big game. There was only one injury!
