Yeah it feels that way. I feel a ‘use it or lose it’ charge (or incrementally increasing rates or the like) could work at Council level too - they’re always short of revenue.
@andrewbartlett
working for positive social change & community development for 40+ years, incl ~12 years as Senator for Qld & 20+ years volunteering at 4ZZZ community radio. Anti-war. Views stated here are my own. RTs ≠ agreement.

Also the issue of land that's approved for building homes being land-banked - sometimes for decades - rather than built on, which keeps prices up through artificial scarcity. (But yeah, workforce shortages (and cost of materials) is also a reason why some sites approved for development sit vacant)
A small German state’s quiet revolt against Microsoft – and what it means for Europe
No bother. It’s happened before - it’s all fine. Gives me a bit of accidental cred.
Thank you - but wrong Andrew Bartlett. The one you’re wanting is English, not Australian. (Never met him, but based on his Twitter he seems like a good guy)
I had assumed as much, but given it’s a public conversation I thought I should be definitive.
That’s not really the same party in my view, but answer is definitely no in any case. Last time I was in the Senate I gave up my job there when I didn’t need to, so I absolutely wouldn’t want to be back there - it would be too soul-destroying.
finally, we're living through precedented times

Taking a moment to acknowledge that today marks 50 years since Brisbane/meanjin’s original community radio station @4zzzradio.bsky.social began broadcasting from studios at UQ’s St Lucia campus. Brisbane’s thriving music scene and independent news landscape (and my youth) owe a lot to the Zeds 🖤

Fighting to host the next COP as though it’s hosting the Olympics is offputting. 50 000 people fly here to be part of the 31st demonstration of failure to prevent runaway climate change.
“The cost of hosting the summit could reach $2 billion, according to govt estimates”

A photograph of two people enjoying an ice cream at the beach, in a vintage dithered style. 'Talking Zeds' 'The Best Show Ever' 'November 13th 10AM-12PM'
The Best Show Ever ran from 2003 to 2013, run by Sarah Werkmeister and joined by Michelle Brown as guest co-host from 2009/10. Dedicated to local & Australian genre spanning music curation, from art pop to hip hop, punk and no wave. TBSE Featured local interviews, and had a strong following and many song requests. Highlights of their broadcasting include interviews with Broadcast and John Waters. The name came about when Sarah and Kirk Scotcher (of the band Sephora at the time) joked about starting a ‘best show ever’ and it became a reality, though Kirk only joined a few episodes before moving to Melbourne. The show continued, playing the latest and greatest in Brisbane music as well as new music from further abroad. Michelle Brown started volunteering at 4ZZZ in the mid 90s and was station manager from 2009 to 2016. Sarah Werkmeister was an announcer and producer from 1999-2014, starting on The Youth Show around ZZZ’s 25th. They both enjoyed many a radiothon.
Each week on Talking Zeds we'll feature a rotation of special guests, historical figures and the people who shaped 4ZZZ into what it is today. This Thursday, the 13th of November we're continuing our 50th celebration special programming with the return of The Best Show Ever!

What is unfolding in Sudan, where the armed group RSF has taken control of the key city of El Fasher, is "the sum of all our fears," says human rights investigator Nathaniel Raymond. "RSF is killing at a scale and a velocity that I haven’t seen since Rwanda."
So it seems.
I fear she will soon be in a lonely place.

Joy Derision.
Something apparently so clearly inappropriate it took them 5 days to say so. (Or more accurately 45 years to say so, given how long #JoyDivision shirts have been worn for).

BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV is set to effectively disband Opus Dei in the coming weeks.
This would be the most sweeping internal reform of his pontificate — and a dramatic continuation of Pope Francis’s legacy.
Interesting chart in this report surveying people on what they think are the major contributions to the 'housing problem'.
Feels like a failure of the (non-right wing) media, politicians and experts that the measures that would have the most impact are so far below immigration

Looking like a resounding victory for Catherine Connolly.
A huge moment for the united left in Ireland, for the many young people whose energy and optimism fuelled Connolly’s campaign, and a pretty clear rejection of uninspiring government party candidates who couldn’t offer a vision.
