Old digital draft of an ink wash painting I wanted to do of Rivendell. I got anxious every time I restarted this, but I should just push myself to finally do it even if is not perfect π #TolkienTrewsday #art
Photo of a wooden table with a watercolour pad, watercolours, brushes, a glass with water and a mountain-bike tyre pencilcase. The pad shows a half-finished icy landscape in blue hues.
Working on the first of six new watercolours for a book about the history of the Elves to be published by Legendaria Ediciones.

How brave were the Wood-elves that they lived in Mirkwood, filled with giant spiders and things far worse? I love to know that their endurance was rewarded by seeing the huge forest become Greenwood once more. Imagine feasting with them then!

Trewsday is the Hobbit name for Tuesday! Tolkien Trewsday is a community event across several online spaces: Twitter, BlueSky and now the Tolkien Society Discord server. Each week we form a fellowship to collectively post about a pre-selected theme about Tolkien (his works and his life) as well as adaptions, academic writing and creative stuff such as fanfic, fanart and cosplay. Themes are selected by myself (the organiser) and also via polls or guest hosts/curators. Together we will build a collective outpouring of creativity, knowledge and love for J.R.R. Tolkien. The inspiration for this comes from the highly successful #FolkloreThursday which engaged lovers of Folklore, academics, artists and more to share their love of folklore. We only ask that if you are joining in, please do so with courtesy and kindness in your posts/tweets. This is a positive-action community event, open to all and supportive of fan diversity. Intolerance, racism, bigotry have no place here. Thank you! A new year means a new design! In 2025 the Two Trees remain symbolic but now Telperion (Silver Tree) has a sword trunk and Laurelin (Gold Tree) has a staff trunk.
π§ββοΈπ§΅ 2/ Letβs begin! This weekβs theme (Week 158) is βRealms: Elvesβ. Please use the following tags when you join in: #TolkienTrewsday #TolkienTuesday #Tolkien. You can tweet art, quotes, thoughts, blogs, academic work, reading recommendations, etc. π¨οΈ

"[...] 1956-57 when I first encountered The Lord of the Rings. What I remember is that I read with no sense that I was engaging with a written text. [...] It was an all-enveloping experience, [...] - that I might have been dreaming." Verlyn Flieger on first reading LotR

Smith of Wootton Major mini edition
These mini editions are great. Here's Smith of Wootton Major with annotations by Verlyn Flieger #Tolkien #TolkienTrewsday #VerlynFlieger
On this #TolkienTrewsday, I realize that my dream is to become a Tolkien artist known for drawing hobbits Γ la Kay Woollard and even Miriam Ellis.
A photo of a book titled There Would Always Be a Fairy Tale: More Essays on Tolkien, by Verlyn Flieger. The cover depicts a painting of a large tree with swirling trunks in a thick forest.
The first page of an essay titled Making Choices: Moral Ambiguity in Tolkien's Major Fictions. This part rebuked the criticisms of Edwin Muir and Edmund Wilson's criticisms that said the heroes in The Lord of the Rings did not face serious temptations, considering the book as childish and not serious.
To honor Verlyn Flieger for #TolkienTrewsday, I admire her thorough, nuanced essays that are accessible to everyday readers like me. I love her essay on moral ambiguity in Tolkien's works AND how she straight up went to Edwin Muir's and Edmund Wilson's throats on the first page. Honestly, fair.
