Wer's wissen will: Im 🧵1/2
4/4 The ICDP borehole farthest away from GFZ was not SWAIS2C in Antarctica (>17,000 km) but the site pictured in the first post, i.e. Whataroa on New Zealand's South Island (18,051 km). In the last 30 years, more than 100,000 metres of core were drilled by ICDP. Read more: www.gfz.de/en/press/new...

Picture showing Dr Sabrina Metzger with parts of her quote: "Focus on female role models for inspiration. Avoid comparing yourself and do what fascinates you, thus, you will excel." The expanded statement: Focus on (female) role models for inspiration. Avoid comparing yourself too much to the (visible) achievements of others. Do what fascinates you most (not what others expect of you) because this is where you will excel. Be direct and frank at what you want, even if it might be a bit embarassing/awkard. Do not expect that others read your body or sign language correctly. In my case I explicitly told my boss that I want to be tenured - despite it felt highly awkward and is not my usual me. He was deeply impressed (he told me later) by this clarity, because it is atypical for women.
5/5 Last colleague in this 🧵 is Dr Sabrina Metzger, leading the GFZ working group "Tectonic Geodesy". Her advice: "Focus on female role models for inspiration. Avoid comparing yourself and do what fascinates you, thus, you will excel." - And again, make sure to read more of her statement in ALT Text
Picture of Nivedita Sairam, PhD, from GFZ. The quote depicted states: "Trust your curiosity, build strong networks, and use your voice. Leadership in science begins when diverse perspectives shape the future." PhD Nivedita Sairam, GFZ She says in a longer statement: "My advice to girls and young women is to trust your curiosity, seek out opportunities boldly, and build a supportive network of mentors and collaborators. Develop your expertise, embrace leadership roles early, and remember that persistence and learning from every experience are key to shaping your scientific journey. Your voice and perspective are valuable, and science advances only when diverse minds contribute."
4/5 Nivedita Sairam, PhD, is also stressing that it's about using your voice: "Trust your curiosity, build strong networks, and use your voice. Leadership in science begins when diverse perspectives shape the
future." Nivedita leads a research group on "Health Impacts of Floods". More in ALT Text
Picture of Dr Erika von Schneidemesser and a quote from her: ''From science to policy, across borders and responsibilites, leadership is built through patience, resilience and using your voice." Excerpt from her full statement: "Imposter syndrome is real. I have and still do struggle with it at times. But you put in the hard work and become the expert, so use your voice. People do recognize hard work and capabilities, and the more you show what you can do the more people will ask you to take on different types of roles, with more responsibility. But it is a balancing act in more ways than one. As a woman in science you also have to make sure that you are getting the same compensation for taking on additional responsibility as your male counterparts would be. You also need to make sure that you find a work-life balance and being able to judge which opportunities are right for you and to recognize that saying no is also an important skill. Believe in yourself. You've got this!"
3/5 Or take our colleague from @rifs-potsdam.bsky.social , Dr Erika von Schneidemesser, working on urban air quality, mobility, and health: "From science to policy, across borders and responsibilites, leadership is built through patience, resilience and using your voice."

Picture of Alison Beamish with a quote: "Leadership in science isn't linear; it's built through opportunity, reamwork and the courage to rise together." She adds: "I became a leader in science through a combination of ambition and luck. I had the good fortune of a supportive leader who saw my potential and gave me a chance and I haven’t looked back since. It not easy balancing a career and kids, but I get momentum from my support system which includes amazing team, who are the backbone of my success. I am extremely lucky to be surrounded by a team of smart, kind and motivated people. My advice to women and girls is to give yourself grace, productivity and success are not linear and the ability to delegate and trust your team is a super power."
2/5: We asked some of our female scientists on their thoughts. Dr Alison Beamish is working in remote sensing & helping farmers with a radar-based rain nowcast: "Leadership in science isn't linear; it's built through opportunity, teamwork and the courage to rise together." More in the ALT Text 👇
Today's the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The global plastics treaty is stuck — but Annika Jahnke @ufz.de and experts @awi.de & @gfz.bsky.social say it can still be saved. A more inclusive, science-based negotiation process could help nations finally curb plastic pollution and protect people & planet.

Family of three with the two grown-ups wearing doctoral hats. Dreiköpfige Familie mit zwei promovierten Schnee-Erwachsenen.
How's it going? The young mother completed her thesis as well and is now Dr. Snow.
A snow family consisting of a snowman, a snowwoman and a snowchild. The woman wears a snowkini, i.e., three tiny ivy leaves, and the snowman wears a mortar board (PhD hat) Eine Schneefamilie bestehend aus einem Schneemann, einer Schneefrau und einem Schneekind. Die Frau trägt einen Snowkini, d. h. drei winzige Efeublätter, und der Schneemann trägt einen Doktorhut (PhD-Hut).
Over the weekend, a small family grew and the young father completed his doctoral thesis...
