I don’t see them “fighting on something as existential as whether we condone the federal govt murdering our own citizens,” because they plainly aren’t.
They’re asking for less than the mythical median voter supports, at a time when the mythical median is moving left. I’d hate to see what they’d propose if they didn’t think they were negotiating from a position of strength.
But they aren’t fighting about the existential issue. They’re struggling even to impose limitations under which the existential issue would obviously remain. Ds won’t get useful legislation from Rs, so the fight is the whole point.
Why is “a realistic legislative push” the goal? Rs won’t agree to anything that matters, so the goal ought to be a righteous fight about summary executions by masked goons running amok in our cities.
A real opposition party would understand that legislating is only part of the job. Picking righteous fights is another. But these Dems live in a defensive crouch and seek above all to be “reasonable.” That’s why they give away what leverage they have, then say there’s just nothing they can do.
