I was apart of the inaugural Teachstravaganzs and it was a blast. We worked hard, we had fun all in the name of science education. Consider applying!
If you have been affected by the fires in LA, or are concerned about your ability to keep precious Drosophila strains going during the latest funding crisis, we will host your strains as a backup. Please email me.
Please amplify. If you are also able to host fly strains, add your name as well.

Every year I am reminded of how incredible the Cell Biology community is at ASCB.
Yup. And efforts to address these very real issues are about to come under sustained attack.

Imagine if we just had a ton of really queer people, butch dykes, trans men and women, etc queue up to use the bathroom outside of Nancy Maceβs office and make them tell us which one we are allowed to use.
Absolute gender fuckery.
BLACK WOMEN IN #STEM
i made a starter pack for black women in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and would really love to keep adding to it so please hmu if you fit the criteria or know someone who does! π§ͺ

Political cartoon showing a line of dominos. The first one is labeled Trans Rights and has a blue-pink-white trans flag painted on it and is tilting. Three people (representing a trans man, trans woman, and person wearing rainbow colors) are pushing back to keep it from falling. Behind it the second domino is labeled "Gay Rights" and "Freedom of Expression" and has a couple, one member of who is pulling the other from behind the domino and walking towards the first domino. The 3rd one "Women's Rights" and "Free Love", a woman is pointing and shouting to rally others behind the domino to come forwards, the 4th one " Free Speech" and "Democracy" and has people peering out from behind it as well as two people running forwards with a piece of lumber, the 5th one "Freedom of Religion" and "Modernity", and has a few people nervously peeking out from behind it, the 6th one is "Literacy". Dominos 7-10 are unlabeled and faded out in the background. Text on bottom: "United we stand, Divided we fall"
United we stand, divided we fall.
Happy Fly Day!
November 18th is #Drosophila day. It commemorates the isolation of a white-eyed mutation, which is now used across the world. That mutation is white[1118], with the numbers standing for Nov 18th, the day it was isolated by Bob Levis. πͺ°
Full Circle Native symposium flyer. It includes a Logo, the date of the event (April 3-4 2025), and confirmed speakers: Casey Dorr (Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute), Rebecca Pollet (Vassar College), Kat MIlligan-McClellan (University of Conneticut), Krystal Tosie (Arizona State University), Lauren W Yowelunh McLester-Davis (UW Madison). The symposium will take place over two days at the UCSF Mission Bay campus in San Francisco. We will have talks from students, postdocs, and faculty and panel discussions on Native and Indigenous topics in the context of research. It also contains a QR code that links to: https://forms.gle/AN7nfkhdB3Fvdkkm7
We will be hosting 3rd Full Circle Symposium for Native Biologists hosted at UCSF in April 2025! We aim to build community and provide meaningful opportunities for Native scientists. If you are a Native biologist who is interested plz fill this out to stay up to date: forms.gle/AN7nfkhdB3Fv...

I think our sources of news are getting so siloed that they are starting to truly believe the vision they are putting out there. I also followed the NYTs and again, what they put out there was colored a particular way. NPR after all these years still manages to get it right (mostly). My two cents.
Iβll just leave this hereβ¦
Also, I just canβt start the morning with my blood pressure through the roof. A lot has got to change.
I am still in my aversion to news phase of grieving. I also feel so betrayed by all the news outlets (except NPR). My news consumption habits are going to have to change (once I am over this phaseβ¦).
America will never be able to move forward until it reckons with its sins of the past. Period. We will be stuck in this loop until we do the work.
Since we are in the re-building mood. I work with a fierce group of undergraduates at Reed College, we study all things cytoskeleton, using Drosophila and their cells. π¨πΎβπ¬π¬π§«

Here's a starter pack of Black Microbiologists. A work in progress as people are migrating over from other platforms. Let me know if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/EcYiqNV
