Itβs on my coffee table now. 2/3rds of way through and have already recommended it to several others
We looked at this, and for 2.7gtons co2/yr of removal weβd need equivalent of about 2x global coal production in rock en-roads.climateinteractive.org/scenario.htm...
Can removals be measured/verified? Likeβ¦how to ensure the rock was definitely not going to have this normal chemical reaction happen w/o us?? And be sure the co2 gets captured durably?
Oh, thatβs so great to hear! If you havenβt yet, please let us know about these events - itβs sounds like a great experience for the students! www.climateinteractive.org/register/
Mixed. Weβre just 100+ days past Helene, nothing rebuilt, still clearing debris, waiting for $. Asheville is looking at zoning, but there are challenges to planning for climate change. The likelihood of disasters is increasing fast and gov, banks, insurance, etc arenβt setup to acct for the new odds
After Helene we were in crisis response for wks. I work/think about climate everyday, but all of a sudden Iβm just trying to unload a truck of water for people and climate change feels far. W/ time though it sinks in. Watching the fires in LA now, I see many here in NC making the connections.
Warming stripes for 1850-2024, changing from blues to reds as the world rapidly warms up
The data is in. 2024 was the warmest year on record, and probably in the whole of human history β about 1.6Β°C warmer than the pre-industrial period.
More than 1 billion individual thermometer measurements, made by thousands of people over many decades, have been condensed into a single number.

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again."
She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.
Favorite book I've read of 2025 so far: Orbital by Samantha Harvey. Honestly, it's going to be tough to top it. Winner of the 2024 Booker Prize. Novel that spins together questions of planetary thinking, humanity, and the awkwardness of life in space. thebookerprizes.com/the-booker-l...

Fascinating episode to learn that George Mitchell, the βfather of fracking,β was really passionate about sustainability but didnβt build his company to evoke the environmental standards he espoused. And he had 10 kids but was also very worried about overpopulation. open.spotify.com/episode/5DA6...
@volts.wtf do you still do a year end music playlist? Remembering downloading the songs years ago, but it hasnβt come across my radar in ages.
Particularly good accompaniment for a 1st roadtrip in the EV. Charging infrastructure along the I-81 corridor is coming along.

This is a pretty fascinating model to play with and to examine what levers we can shift to make an impact in climate change. Lots of ways to play and learn more. @climateinteractive.org

I think everyone should get to know the west African term βwahalaβ.
It generally means βchaosβ, βconfusionβ, or βdramaβ. A clusterfuck.
Iβve been on a mission for years to use it more regularly in my work.
Becauseβ- *gestures at everything*
See wahala?!???

Kids in Cordillera Blanca of Peru sitting by a fire in front of epic mountain range
One story, was about how a feature on a mountain ridge was known as the βsleeping bearβ because a glacial ice field looked like a blanket covering a silhouette of a sleeping bear. Remember that one man said, now they say the bear is awake, because the glacier is gone.
In 2009, I spent several weeks in the Cordillera Blanca and heard stories in the indigenous communities about how the glaciers were melting & seasons changing. 15 years later, itβs only gotten worse π www.nytimes.com/2024/11/19/s...
