I read Under the Poppy very many years ago now, and I still think about it on a regular basis. Such a great book, so many vibes.

I had a minor eyelid surgery today and didn't get an eye patch. The part of me that's actively writing a pirate novel is disappointed. The rest of me is relieved that it was such a minor procedure.
Hi.
I'm still deep in the novel-writing process, and trying not to lose momentum with everything that's going on in the world.
If you need a little break from the real horrors, I have some fictional horrors for you:

Happy New Year!
2025 had some really amazing highs, and some very dark lows. I'm glad it's a year we're putting to rest.
For 2026, I hope it's a gentle year. And that joy finds us all as often as possible. I'm hoping for beautiful sunsets, and unexpected glimpses of the moon.
The illustration of Elizabeth Harlander and the Creature standing in the frame. Fanart for Guillermo del Toro's movie "Frankenstein".
"To be lost and to be found, that is the lifespan of love. And in its brevity, its tragedy... this has been made eternal. Better this way... to fade... with your eyes gazing upon me.." π

A heavily edited photograph of a dark hallway in an abandoned building. At the end of the dark hall is a pile of rubble on the left, and a brightly lit staircase on the right. There is barely visible graffiti on the wall at the end of the hall. It's possible to just barely make out a stick figure in the gloom.
I'm not around much, because I'm focusing on writing.
But I wanted to pop in to wish everyone a very merry holiday season (the horrors persist, but so do we).
May there be a light at the end of the hall for all of you.
Reposting for the evening crowd! I'm incredibly proud of this step in my writing journey.
Today is the day! I've launched my novel, The Cold Heart, on Royal Road. The first 8 chapters will be releasing throughout the day.
I would love it if you were able to check it out!

A digital book cover. At the top the title "The Cold Heart," black border around entire image. At the center, a female pirate, wearing traditional pirate clothing including the tricorn hat. She has glowing eyes. Behind her, a tall ship. The ship and pirate are rendered in dark colours, the background a light green/teal/blue.
Rumor has it...my novel is launching on Royal Road on December 6th.

Thanks! I have quite a bit left to go - probably going to be about 40 chapters. My compromise is that I haven't put the app on my phone, so I can only access from desktop/browser. Definitely cuts down on scrolling time.
2 months ago, I decided to take a bit of social media break. And now I'm 14 chapters into writing a pirate necromancer novel.
Lovely capture!
Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words.
A photo of Emily Carr's book Hundreds and Thousands on a patio table. Blue sky above. Flower pots with various plants inside them in the background.
A photo of a yellow Victorian era house surrounded by green, leafy trees. Blue sky with a few wispy white clouds above. This is the Emily Carr house in Victoria, British Columbia.
A photo of a framed black and white photograph of the Carr sisters. An oval portrait inside a rectangular wood frame.
Picked up this book at a visit to Carr House a few weeks ago. Maybe 2025 is a year of reading about art instead of making art. My camera and pen sit idle, filled with weariness.
A close up photo of white shells with the two sides attached to each other lying on a pebble beach. The shells are filled with water and have barnacles growing on the inside. There are also a few pebbles at the center of each shell.
A close up photo of a single white shell on a pebble beach. The shell is filled with water and has barnacles growing on the inside.
A close up photo of a small white sea shell on a dark rock. It has kelp growing from the top shell that almost looks like it's wearing a hat.
Sea things.

To be a "serious" writer, one must have:
A favorite punctuation mark (it's the semicolon)
A controversial grammar opinion
Anxiety over spending money on books, pens, or notebooks
Anxiety, period
Something ineffable you want to eff
Fear of opening emails
another go at a "Pep Ventosa"style creation.
11 images, one shot every 6-8 feet walking around this tree. I couldn't get back far enough all the way around so had to make do. then imported layers into Ps from Bridge, and opacity adjusted on each layer.

A picture of a black cat's face. Large yellow eyes. The cat looks concerned (really, what he means to convey is "no photos"). He's lying on a blue and white blanket on a grey sofa.
I'm in a total creative void. It's so uncomfortable.
Here's a cute cat.
It's August, which means release month for FEAST, my horror adventure novel about a kaiju Hobbes' Leviathan, the sea-stranded devoured souls surviving inside its belly and their rebellion against the beast + the cult that feeds it to sustain an astral Atlantis

I see grocery/takeout shaming discourse going around again, so this is your periodic historian reminder that cooking from scratch daily while working has never been sustainable, and for millennia everyone either relied on takeout & restaurants or ate in huge households w/ big dorm-like group dining.
