As politicians gut social programs and ignore the needs of disabled people, we have to ask: Who is stepping up? The Panthers taught us that real power comes from communities taking care of each other. That’s the model we need now.

Disability justice doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s rooted in the radical activism of Black, Indigenous, and POC-led movements. The fight against ableism is a fight against white supremacy, capitalism, and systemic neglect. And that’s a fight the Panthers understood.

The next time you hear about Section 504, ADA, or disability rights, remember that it took a cross-movement coalition to make it happen. & the Black Panthers were a crucial part of that history.

And we are fighting harder now than ever. The same systems that targeted the Panthers are still harming marginalized communities today. We are watching unprecedented attacks on the Black, brown, indigenous, trans, queer, disability, immigrant etc. communities, and we need to stand together.

The Panthers’ Free Breakfast Program, community clinics, and mutual aid efforts were disability justice in action. They understood that access to food, healthcare, and dignity weren’t privileges but rights—something disabled activists continue to fight for today.

The disability rights movement wasn’t just helped by the Panthers. It was shaped by their radical approach to community care. Disability justice—coined later by Black and brown disabled activists—builds on the same principles the Panthers put into practice.

This wasn’t an accident—it was part of the Panthers’ broader commitment to intersectional liberation. They saw the fight for disability rights as connected to their own struggle against racism and state violence. Solidarity wasn’t just a concept—it was action.

Driven by Brad Lomax, The Black Panthers cooked and delivered hot meals to the disabled protesters every single day. Many of the demonstrators had mobility, sensory, and health-related disabilities, making access to food a challenge. The Panthers stepped in where the government failed.

But what kept that sit-in going for 26 days? Community solidarity. And no group showed up harder than the Black Panther Party, especially Brad Lomax, a disabled Black Panther wheelchair user.

In 1977, disabled activists staged a sit-in at a federal building in San Francisco to demand the signing of regulations for Section 504, which banned disability discrimination in federally funded programs. ✨It was the longest occupation of a federal building in U.S. history.✨ (2/13)
