Show Your Thinking. Important across all art-related roles. For commercial work, you need to be able to deliver sketches and color roughs so ADs can provide you appropriate feedback before you deliver the final.
Know Your Audience. A heavily stylized portfolio probably isn't going to be accepted for a project that requires photorealism. A portfolio with only character art isn't going to be hired for environment work. Make sure your portfolio hits the needs of the role you're applying for!
Sort into Sections. If you've worked multiple specialized art roles, please sort them into separate sections! Concept design, GUI, Illustration, etc. While there are certainly overlapping skillsets, these are each different specialties.
Quality over Quantity. We want to see your BEST artwork. 6 solid pieces is more convincing than 24 average pieces. Keep updating your portfolio with your most recent work, so we know what you are currently capable of!
Simple is Better. The fewer clicks it takes to get to your body of work, the better an AD can properly review your art. Personally, I am grid and masonry over carousel layouts. Having to scroll through art one piece at a time makes me want to cry.
Clarity is Key. Text is clearly legible and readable. Links are working. Images can be viewed large and clearly. Ask yourself if your intent to convey your aesthetic and style comes at the cost of readability.
Portfolio = Resume. Your portfolio informs what you are capable of and whether you're a good fit for the project. It should contain work that represents what you want to be hired for. ALSO include your email so we can contact you for work!
