Then I catch an episode of In Space that is straight up body horror and one of the characters has a gruesome wound. It's still very kid friendly, but for a twelve year old it SEEMED more adult.

I don’t think I can overstate just how many different hobbies these games turned me on to.
And they were also my introduction to imported video games.
