The system is what made the LGS a great option for weekly play.

Oh course, you can do that with MC and Spotlight series… aside from only running like 8 total a year instead of 40+ events. But the GP system asked you to play at the local level too. Where the others do not reward you for engaging with your lgs.

Setting aside getting byes and points, for your average player sometimes it was fun to go to a nearby GP for the social aspect, checking out the vendors, and who knows? Maybe you spike the event randomly.
