In the short term, both governments should pull out all the stops to shield households from any increase in their bills.
But the only way to ensure this cannot happen in future is to move away from fossil fuels entirely - renewables are the only way to truly achieve energy and economic security.
If political leaders decisively had acted after Russia's invasion of Ukraine to speed the transition away from fossil fuels and insulate our homes, then families would be far more protected from these price shocks.
Instead we see them siding with oil companies demanding tax cuts.

An energy future that includes oil and gas leaves us all at the mercy of rogue leaders and global politics.
Household bills could soar again as greedy oil companies capitalise on the conflict in the Middle East and make more obscene profits.

The North Sea Knitters embarked on an epic journey from Grangemouth to St Fergus, cycling the whole length of a proposed carbon capture pipeline.
In 2024, we unearthed over 60 lobbying meetings.
Ministers were speaking publicly in favour of the project (a big no no for planning applications) all while refusing to discuss it with groups like us who are concerned about the plans.

In 2022, we lodged a formal objection to the planning application.
This was based on the devastating climate impact it would cause - and the risk of locking in fossil fuel use for decades.

The full climate harm of the project was exposed π§
Independent research by Carbon Tracker showed the entire development could be responsible for 5 times more climate emissions than the companies claimed.

February 2026 marks 4 years since plans were submitted for a new gas burning power station in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.
Hereβs some of the ways the climate movement has been resisting it β¬οΈ
The Israeli govt is trying to expand gas extraction in Palestinian waters.
Dana Petroleum already holds similar licences but refuses to say whether it will take them up.
No company in Scotland should be profiting from the pillaging of Palestinian resources.

Blue box with quote saying βFossil fuel companies like Exxon cannot be trusted with people or the planet and yet political leaders have abdicated responsibility and let this firm dictate what happens. Big business is setting the agenda and trampling over workers and communities and our elected politicians are afraid to stand up to them.β βNobody in either the UK or Scottish Government appears to have learned anything from the closure of Grangemouth. They are floundering around trying to respond to decisions by companies, rather than actively shaping the future of our industries.β Quote attributed to Catrina Randall, Just Transition Campaigner, Friends of the Earth Scotland"
Exxon mobil announced the early closure of the Fife Ethylene plant at Mossmorran.
This is a yet another example of the political failure to properly plan a transition for workers and communities.
