Protectionist policies can be very important for a country to build up an industry or protect itself from dumping. Trade wars are another beast entirely and will only hurt working/middle-class Americans who will lose jobs and purchasing power.

No trade war will restore US manufacturing, US prosperity, or US strength as a world power. Without strong trade partnerships or policies that prioritize US workers, the world, including China, will move on together and without us.
