The Detroit Lions' tradition of playing on Thanksgiving Day started in 1934 when ownership thought a Thanksgiving Day matchup might draw more than the 12,000 fans it normally drew for a Sunday game.
The idea worked.
25,000 fans saw the Lions lose 19-16 to the Bears on November 29, 1934

It worked. The Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day game was good TV and became a tradition.
Dallas has hosted a game on Thanksgiving game every year except in 1975 and 1977 when the St. Louis Cardinals got the chance.
The Cowboys are 33-22-1 record on Thanksgiving Day.
