One of the most infamous cartoon's of the Second World War was published #OnThisDay 1942. Zec's 'The price of petrol has been increased by one penny - Official' prompted stormy parliamentary debates and a not so subtle threat from the government to shut down the Daily Mirror.

βYou were the joy of my heart; too swiftly you flew away.
To my longing eyes, your fresh image alone remains.
Surely you are now with the angels, my beloved daughter.
To your mother, in this realm of separation, sorrow remains.β
Couldn't get a much better visual representation of left vs. right differences on the question of economic distress and rearmament in the interwar crisis. First cartoon is Daily Worker. Second is Daily Express. Published within a day of each other in March 1936.
Late night blues. Not much blues mandolin around but if you want it then it's Johnny Young to go to. Probably best known in the UK for the tracks on Chicago/The Blues/Today! Vol. 3 (with the great Walter Horton on harp). This is an ace clip... www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SXe...
Shortly after saying this, Orwell shouted out "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH" before being led away by woke military policemen...
Couldnβt resist this rather luxurious box (book) set. No relation, sadlyβ¦
Yes! Mo Pleasure
Guessing he'd been on some of the tours that emerged out of the 1950s/60s European blues/ folk boom and just liked the place. He released an album called Praise to Helsinki in 1970 and married a Finnish lady named Leila a few years after that :)
Am I the only one here that finds the line dancing revival scariest?
It's not the biggest surprise of my professional life, if I'm being honest.
Late night blues. Eddie Boyd's 'Third Degree'. A bluesman who deserves to be better remembered. Got fed up with American racism and moved to Finland in 1970. Died in Helsinki in 1994 and there's a memorial plaque at his house at Helsinginkatu 12c... www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljKZ...
A characteristically intelligent piece from @joshglancy.bsky.social that drops within WBY's "the best lack all conviction/ the worst are full of passionate intensity" tradition... www.jewishnews.co.uk/on-a-very-na...
If theyβre serious about this, they shouldβve started work on it like a year ago. At least.
And if theyβre super serious, thereβs some real unsavory folks in Balochistan who might be interested in helping. Or maybe leave that business to the Emiratis.

As someone who worked on the First World War Galleries back in 2011-14, this is a very gratifying thread.
Evergreen headline. This particular version is from the 1973 Yom Kippur War...
I suspect that's probably the least of his worries for the time being... www.jewishnews.co.uk/new-irgc-com...

Party time steroid injection for Britain's paranoid anti-ULEZ loons. www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_ent...
The contrast between the US SecDef belittling European allies and the French president outlining a forward-deterrent scheme for Europe today is quite something.

Tonight's blues listening. John Hammond, who passed away on 28 February aged 83. RIP. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwfH...
"Now that the Cabinet's gone to dinner,
The Secretary stays getting thinner and thinner,
Wracking his brains in a bid to report,
What he thinks that they think that they ought to have thought."
Don't know much about the cartoonist, Colin Wheeler, but this August 1975 effort, presumably inspired by the Crossman diaries, is an absolute belter. One for all contemporary history research students...
At least we've dodged an Anglo-American war over interior design preferences
Though the byline pic of @rentouljohn.bsky.social in full-blown New Romantic mode is arguably more striking...
Digging around in old New Statesman volumes again today. October 1987 front cover. Four more years, folks. Four more years...
The Iran war has escalated sharply, engulfing the wider region and destabilising the global economy. My latest blog is about where it might go from here markurban.substack.com/p/tell-me-ho...
