I'm a broken record on this but folks haven't realized how difficult things will be after this regime is over given the tentacles it is leaving behind. Even the most superficial reading of theories of institutional change will tell you this is a path we don't want to depend on.

Not true, we have prosecuted our own service members for war crimes. It's not common, but it has happened and will again.

We are a very stupid country

For the same reason that driving without a license doesn't also make you guilty of speeding if you weren't, in fact, speeding. They're two different things with different requirements, and neither is contingent upon the other.

A lot of them have reduced/eliminated their foreign correspondents' section, so they aren't gathering their own footage and the only thing available is whatever the DoD puts out or TikTok videos. There are just very, very few US journalists in Iran to capture anything.

There are two sets of laws involved: one governs when a country can go to war lawfully, while the other governs how to conduct war lawfully. While they always coexist in time and place, they don't ever intersect: the outcomes of the former don't become inputs in the latter or vice versa.

I have opted out of Alexa+. The moment I can't, my Echo will be in the trash.

I didn't say it was, I was talking about the example of a hotel full of NATO generals.

In the eyes of international law, there is a war. Int'l law doesn't care what any country has declared, it cares about armed hostilities of a certain scope, intensity, etc., which has certainly happened.

06.03.2026 04:17 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

That's not true. Civilian casualties can't be disproportionate to the military advantage gained by the strike, but if the hotel is primarily a barracks, it's not a war crime to strike it.

Only by people that they never cared about anyway. The MAGA mob will continue to exist after this administration and welcome all the petty, oafish bullies and grifters that Republicans are unanimously confirming and supporting.

Those are certainly dual-use targets, no?

Once armed hostilities start, you don't need a self-defense justification to attack the enemy under international humanitarian law (law of armed conflict). Enemy warships are lawful targets at all times. Even if the war was begun illegally.

Rubio's justification for attacking Iran:

Iran would have retaliated against the US if Israel attacked Iran. Therefore the US acted preemptively.

So, why didn't the Trump admin just restrain the principal recipient of US military assistance from launching such an illegal attack in the first place?

02.03.2026 21:12 πŸ‘ 967 πŸ” 274 πŸ’¬ 74 πŸ“Œ 24

It was a UN Security Council mission, actually. The UNSC authorized states to take military action against Libya, something that happens extremely infrequently, and the Obama admin argued that failing to support that would undermine the int'l order, a core national interest.

Merely funding an enemy doesn't make you a belligerent to a conflict.

Americans Are Leaving the U.S. in Record Numbers More citizens are replanting overseas, drawn by a quality of life made easily affordable by the U.S.’s enviable salaries.

This is such a well done piece that reports out, with hard data and interviews, something profound about what's gone wrong in this country.

They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.

This is why Jeffries' insistence that Dems not disrupt the speech was so woefully misguided. The billionaire press is going to normalize whatever he says, so don't let the stories be about whatever he says.

From @theathletic.com: "The U.S. men’s hockey team won Olympic gold for the first time since the 'Miracle on Ice' 46 years ago, and for a time, the joy belonged to everyone," our columnist writes. "By the next day, it didn’t." nyti.ms/4s1Csv8

The point is to do things so that the other side makes errors in their response. Doing nothing lets the headlines be about whatever Trump says. Is that what the Dem caucus wants?

Conservatives get elected while promising unpopular policies all the time. If our only analysis of such focus group/polling results is just to abandon the issue, we are not a serious political party. We have to figure out how to change that conversation, not run from it. They won't drop it anyway.

24.02.2026 06:04 πŸ‘ 6 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Stop sacrificing minorities to run away from conservative attacks: they'll make them anyway. Fight back with values that your base actually has and you'll be so much stronger. And you'll normalize liberal values instead of apologizing for them like this again and again every cycle!
