Absolutely. I joke it was unsuccessful but actually I found and fixed at least 5 bugs

My first performance stability test for Loadstar was...unsuccessful ๐

Been a while since my last update. I'm still alive, just deep in the code! 40,000 lines of hand crafted code and counting.

Oof, that's gotta hurt!
Thanks! The distant stars stay where they are the whole time you're in the system and then the next time you hyperspace they all move, so you get a different backdrop each time - quite pleased with it.
Just posted my latest Loadstar devlog all about generating a fake real milky way galaxy

I remember getting my first triangle to render in opengl back in the day. Nice work!
After every major new feature there's the inevitable bug fixing grind #solodev #gamedev #CodingLife
Working on a classic hyperspace effect for my game which combines #FTL combat with #Elite #openworld space exploration in 2D with a #retro 16bit vibe. What do you think?

Used to make cider too, but then we moved to a house with no apple trees :(
Had this on the Atari STE, classic game! Loved how it combined 3D action with the 2D puzzle map.

Thanks, feel free to dm me if you have any questions or anything!
That's right! I want the player to feel like they are in the real universe in the future. Plus it was just really fun generating planets. Sometime I hope to make randomly generated surfaces for them too.
Randomly generating solar systems in Loadstar
Using real stars from SIMBAD database and generating solar systems modelling planet mass, distance and temperature to determine planet type

Solo game dev - one day you're creating pixel art using a 48 colour palette, the next day you're trying to relearn how logarithms work!

Thanks! I remember how great it felt as a kid playing Elite 2 because it had the real milky way galaxy. I really wanted to recreate that in my own game.
Over 15,000 Real Stars in my Game's Galaxy Map
I used an astronomical database to take a slice of the milkyway 200 parsecs across for my open world spacetrader Loadstar. Every dot is a star with a solar system which can be visited

Figured out what was wrong with my previous galaxy map - fell for the old degrees vs. radians trap - really happy with the new one! Instantly familiar to me from my days playing #elite 2 and #EliteDangerous !

Building a realistic 2d galaxy map from academic data is hard! Any space travellers who can tell me if this looks right?

5. A lot of stars in SIMBAD don't have distance data so they are missing from my 100 parsec galaxy map ๐คฆ
4. A parsec is just over 3 light years (and of course measures distance not time)
3. Brown dwarfs are not quite big enough to be stars and there are loads of them floating about the galaxy not part of any solar system
