Honestly, pals, this is *excellent*. You know how seldom we review super-hero comics at @brokenfrontier.bsky.social but this self-published series is as good as anything coming out of the big US serial comics publishers right now. Highly recommended.

Apparently from my research newsagent distribution of US Marvel/DC comics ended in 1996. My primary source for comics for two decades. How can it be that long ago?

The cover to Marvel Comics' Squirrel Girl Omnibus collection featuring Squirrel Girl daydreaming about her adventures with other heroes.
THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL Omnibus - I honestly think this is one of *the* great Marvel runs. Not simply because of the meta experimentation, the wit and humour, and the creative synergy. But also because at its heart it's all about friendship and found family, and it's simply beautiful for that.

The cover to Vol. 13 of the Silver Surfer Marvel Epic Collection series showing the Surfer in conflict with Daredevil and Spider-Man.
MARVEL EPIC COLLECTION: SILVER SURFER Vol. 13 - It's JMD so lots of epic cosmic concepts and a fascinating return to the emotionally detached Surfer persona. And the Garney art is a treat. It's a run that gets a bit derailed though by fill-ins, guest scripting and some very '90s art towards the end.

The cover of the AMERICAN CARNAGE trade paperback emphasising its themes of fighting the forces of white supremacism.
AMERICAN CARNAGE - Late stage (original) Vertigo. I thought this was excellent. Involved crime drama that keeps the readers on their toes across its nine-issue run.

The cover of the seventh SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN Masterworks collection featuring Spider-Man and the Black Cat chasing the villainous Hobgoblin over the New York skyline.
MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN Vol. 7 - The end of the Mantlo/Milgrom et al run. Absolutely one of my all-time fave Spidey periods. Back in the street level, rich supporting cast days before all the mystic stuff and multiverse-jumping.

Yeah. Reading comprehension is not their strong suit. They also like "Josef K" too.
What they don't like using is their actual names.

I really enjoyed the CLASSICS FROM THE COMICS one but I can only imagine the efforts they must have been going to in avoiding strips that ended with someone being caned, slippered or undergoing some other form of corporal punishment.

BIG COMIC FORTNIGHTLY was the IPC reprint one yes. BEEZER and TOPPER would have been in DC Thomson's own reprint monthly CLASSICS FROM THE COMICS which had a near-15 year run.

The cover of a 1990s issue of the UK kids comic BUSTER after it had incorporated the similar humour comic WHIZZER AND CHIPS into its pages. Can't find an artist credit.
The cover of the issue of 2000 AD in the late '70s when TORNADO was merged into it with alien editor Tharg welcoming the "Tornado heroes" Big E, Wolfie Smith and Black Hawk.
Was wondering to myself when was the last time two British comics merged and best info I can find is when BUSTER and WHIZZER AND CHIPS did in 1990. Couldn't happen today of course! (Well unless the BEANO and COMMANDO did!).
Also I really like that Gibbons cover from the 2000 AD/TORNADO merge.

Yeah DC Thomson often went the merger route too but by the time the DANDY was cancelled the practice had stopped (and it went digital anyway for a few months after the print issues stopped.) I can remember a few titles merging with the DANDY but offhand can't think of any that did with the BEANO.
