I think the media have normalized drone strikes and spec ops stuff as "not counting" that low-info voters didn't see Trump as *ordering* any real military action back in his first term.
Of course, I may still be giving these people too much credit.

More to the point, all those particular "OMG, what bastard did a nice thing for the grunts?!" items people call out amount to less than a tenth of one percent of the spending hike.
People seize indignantly upon the suggestion of someone else having a nicer life than before, though.

At this point, we need a downright draconian anti-corruption regime with nobody in the administration, from POTUS down to staffers, allowed to accept any form of outside income, gifts, lawsuit payments, interest payments, or own/operate businesses or any sort of stock.

The thing is, effective analysis sort of depends on a degree of competence on the part of the analysand. If you’re trying to predict what a good chess player will do next, you can usually narrow it down to a handful of strong moves. A total amateur might do virtually anything.
