I voted against what looked like an Amazon distribution center at this site, and when that passed 5-2 at Council, I said I wanted a Costco there instead. The distribution project failed at the bank, which is the only reason Costco could consider this location.
1. Reached out to Costco team to keep them on track coming to Asheville
2. Reached out to DOT to understand barriers & costs related to Smokey Park Hwy
3. Reached out to staff to understand City/County role so barriers to development are more clear, including the expensive stormwater issues
I have formally invited and enthusiastically supported bringing Costco here for over a decade. Disappointment is an understatement, and here’s what I’m working on to keep Costco coming to Asheville:
The City of Asheville received the bad news that Costco is withdrawing their zoning application for the Enka-Candler site.
Our community wants a Costco and I’ll keep working on it until we get them here.

The account has accumulated about $500,000, but needs a policy in order to distribute funds for tree planting and preservation. The Urban Forestry Commission has asked to hold a special meeting to advise on a policy.
What if a developer can’t meet the tree requirement?
The tree payment-in-lieu, or fee-in-lieu as it’s commonly known, is an option for when developers can’t meet the infrastructure requirements for #treecanopy preservation and planting.
