Um…point of order. Why are their photos published in the story when they “asked to be identified only by their first names because they fear retaliation if deported back to Russia”? The FSB knows how to identify people from photos. (So does DHS, for that matter.)

The great Chester Himes and Griot, his beloved blue point Siamese, named "after the magicians in the courts of West African kings." Himes also said that if he stayed away too long, Griot would wreck his studio and chew up his books. #Caturday

When masked federal death squads are roaming US streets with total impunity, the government SHOULD shut down and be held to account.

Super 8 was my gateway, and part of me will always love it. But isn’t it just a little sad that the Super 8 versions got the ~really~ groovy box art, and not so much the 16mm ones?

Wow! Seriously great selections. Every one of these is a great watch, and the chance to see them on a big screen (where they belong) is rare. Jacques Tourneur’s CANYON PASSAGE is a particularly deep cut, and it’s presence in this series is a sign you should hitch up your wagon and head into town.

Ivan Dixon - Wikipedia

Many of us of a certain age prolly remember director Ivan Dixon as “Kinch” on “Hogan’s Heroes.” Well, there’s a lot more to his career than that. Dig it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Di...

A good piece about a great, thought provoking movie (suppressed in part by the FBI) that you must see. You must also militate for someone solid to release the new 4K restoration on blu. (The only DVD release was 26 years ago!)

Great movie. The world desperately needs a blu-ray release of the new restoration.

Pixar designed Toy Story to be printed on physical film. The Disney renaissance movies were the same.

Today, it's hard to see them as they were meant to be seen. The versions on streaming and home media aren't quite the same films that ruled the '90s:

Our SECRET VAULT OF TORMENT show tomorrow 10/28 includes a secret feature that alarmed censors at the time. A sign with this “WARNING!” was displayed in some Canadian theaters. Ontario banned it outright b/c it was “Full of fiendish & diabolical doings.” Holland, too, b/c its “degrading effect.”

Correction: the Shock! package was issued in 1957, not 1958. Apologies for the brain fart. (Sure wish Bluesky let you edit your stuff after posting, like everyone else does.)

Shock! (aka Shock Theater) was a package of horror, thriller, and mystery features syndicated on 16mm to local stations across the US in 1958. It kickstarted the TV horror host fad, which quickly spread nationwide. Nearly 70 years later folks like Svengoolie still keep the tradition alive.
