Again trump doesn’t control the judiciary as much as they might want to. You need to build in separation and independence. The funding is the most important part of the equation

Tax-funded press is an obviously bad idea? Is the judiciary an obviously bad idea? Doesn't it suffer the same challenges? Would you want the judiciary to exist or not depending on the generosity of philanthropists?

You could say the same about the judiciary, and it is happening, but not completely.
I think the government is holding up ok despite a rather perfect storm of challenging conditions. Remains to be seen, but regardless, what is the better alternative?
I remain convinced that we somehow need the press to become a 4th branch of the government, funded by tax payer dollars.
If you took $1 billion and gave it to the endowment of a different small college each day, they could each provide a free college education to several hundred students per year in perpetuity. Instead we are using that money to bomb schools and kill students in Iran, for no clearly stated purpose.

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.
