we enjoyed adding more depth to the npcs with performers who can bring something more than I can just act out as ST. Adrian is in the main cast but getting them to play opposite their npc sister was so good in our end caps.

You might call it biased, but I always approach a new BadHouse RPG Actual Play series with excitement and eagerness. This first episode of Midnight Rush is probably one of my favorite things I’ve ever seen from BadHouse and I was a guest on Itaewon by Night! The show is filled with beautiful sound design that makes you feel immersed in the world. Each of the performers is acting their asses off and they portray characters that feel so gritty, realized, and jaded. I was a fan of Ambrose’s balance of cynicism and wit in Adrian, Stellaluna’s Coralie is a measured and nuanced portrayal of a character that could easily be written off without much of a thought, and Laurel’s face-acting with Tinny had me rolling on the floor! Though the stand out for me was Josephine Kim’s Chanh Yeol, who is a maelstrom of Millennial regret, Harry Dubois’ substance issues, and heartbreaking desperation. A shining example of a truly pathetic man. I truly cannot wait to see all of these characters tested through the horror of gig-hunting. The boldest swing that I have only seen done once before in an AP, is the use of comic panels, brought to life by Fabian Lelay, that are interwoven within scenes between performers in zoom windows. These art pieces help keep interest and provide plenty of visual context to help visualize scenes with the greatest of ease. I hope this is a new beginning for BadHouse and we see their next shows utilize more creative decisions like this to set themselves apart from the rest of the industry. I’m also a fan of the scene transitions in particular. Such a smooth use of slides and cuts to flow perfectly with the plot.
I wanted to give a shoutout in particular to the cast and Fabian for filling the story with plenty of light and levity while maintaining that dark and depressing core siting at the core of the World of Darkness, it showcases such a clear understanding of the source material with plenty of creativity to make the world your own. I love the dichotomy of the brightness of the art in comparison to the dread that lingers on the game. You can feel capitalism swallowing up every one of these character’s backup plans. Excited to see what emotional connections form when options dwindle.
One of our only other reviews that made making this series all the more worth it.
Words arent just that, they are fuel, they burn the fire of creation and passion brighter than stars.
