But other people close to me have lived with severe mental illness disorders for decades. Happy lives mostly, thanks to medicine. So things can get better.

I'm so sorry. Last year, my cousin got convinced that he could somehow "upload" his mind into AI, understand everything about the world and be with us forever if he got rid of his physical body.
